Amol Rajan - 7/10

Sunday, April 08, 2012 - This is a steakhouse that does cocktails. It has a short menu; trendy, charming and young waiting staff; stylish decor; excellent beef; better mains than starters; better desserts than mains; fine fish; and superb historic and cultural pedigree...The 225g onglet steak from Ulster is cheapest and probably worth passing over in favour of the 300g grilled rib-eye from La Pampa in Argentina. Remarkable to think: at 18.50, this is actually decent value in our inflationary capital. This fatty, greasy, but moist slab is very flavourful, and when accompanied by the bearnaise, blue cheese or chimichurri sauces, goes down an absolute treat.

I was a bit reluctant to go to a restaurant called Meat people but my boyfriend was craving for proteins. Meat not being my favourite I was pleasently suprised when I was handled the menu by a cute waiter as they had a huge selection of non-meat starters. I had a Monk fish with pak choi as a main the taste and quality was well above any place I have been in Islington! My boyfriend had a roast baby chicken: he said it was cooked to perfection.

Although I don't eat meat I do eat chips and I must say Meat People's chips are divine! We shared a carafe of house wine which was perfect for two, as we're not big drinkers.

Desertwise MP doesn't lack creativity far from that! I had a pistachio sponge cake with apple sorbet! Fab!

Question mark : For that price I am wondering how come people are not queuing outside!

Islington you are a mystery to me sometimes!

A new meat house in Islington! Well, i was debating whether to go as we were with the kids....Meat people is now officially my local. The staff were so friendly and accommodating with us i couldn't believe it. Thanks a lot. I thought you might appreciate another positive feedback. I am not a wanna be food blogger but if you managed to put a huge smile on my kids face with your confit mushrooms then you must do something really good! And your Pork Belly -wow. Your coffee is fantastic, and i drink a lot of coffee around Angel. A big thank you. We will definitely see you soon....

I went to Meat People in Angel last night and was very excited at the prospect of adding a good quality restaurant to my list of 3 in the Angel area. We started with Scallops and Pork Belly - bloody fantastic both of them. Then went onto Ribeye and Onglet, well i must say the Ribeye was possibly one of the tastiest i have had, and i don't say that lightly - cooked exactly how i asked which is never usually happens. My girlfriend took the waitresses recommendation of the Onglet and i was a bit jealous, it was an amazing cut of steak and i'll be ordering it on my return.

Sauces were very nice although i could have had more of them, however i would swim in Bearnaise if i could so maybe thats just me. Then there was the chips, now me and my girlfriend have been known to travel miles for good potato's and these were some of the best i've had in a long time, crisp and soft, full of flavour - needless to say we ordered another portion.

I've read that Meat People haven't changed much of the decor, but i can tell you as someone who knew the building before, i think they have done an amazing job restoring its beauty and brought a charm and elegance never found in the previous restaurants. Well done, we will be recommending and returning soon!

I dined at the new steakhouse 'Meat People' in Angel on Friday 27th January and to be honest I was pleasantly surprised.

Our booking was at 9pm and the restaurant was buzzing, we had a drink in the bar to start and then we were taken by a very friendly manager to our table.

Our waitress(es) were incredibly informative and helpful. After taking recommendations we went for the pork belly and the scallops - INCREDIBLE. Cooked to perfection, the pork belly's apple and ginger sauce complemented the dish and the chickpea puree with the scallops was something I'd never tried before but definitely would again.

We had the Ribeye and the Ribs for main, both ordered medium-rare, both came medium-rare. Lots of flavour and the chimmichurri sauce on the ribs really added a new depth. We had the asparagus with parmesan and egg, chips and roasted courgettes as sides - the chips were everything I could want in chips - not soggy but not burnt with some actual potato inside! All the sides were fresh, warm and came at the same time as the mains which is always something I appreciate.

Drinks-wise we pushed the boat out a little with a bottle of barolo but it was definitely worth it! Powerful, complex and amazing with the ribeye.

We ended our evening with a chocolate fondant and two beautifully presented coffees. I don't even need to comment on the fondant (who can fault chocolate?)

All in all we had a great night, it was nice to be in a small venue with great service and atmosphere, I'm glad we decided to go despite being hesitant after reading other reviews. I was not expecting the food quality to be as high as it was for somewhere advertising 'breakfast' on the windows.

I was in Meat People last Friday with my husband and we really enjoyed it. We had an amazing mackerel and a delicious pork belly as starters and then we share the platter. Good portions and very good prices. I will defo come back!!

I would echo the reviews below. Went here last week and was hoping to find a really good local steakhouse maybe not quite of the ilk of Buen Ayre or Hawksmoor but a good substitute on my doorstep.

Sadly this was not the case - share platter was ordered and pretty measly especially when paying for sides and sauces. Chimichurri was oily and not at all a compliment to the steaks and the chips were little better than oven cooked from frozen.

Weighing in at a price that did not reflect the quality and I really don't know what this restaurant is trying to achieve as it has no differentiating feature nor anything memorable enough to return for. A real disappointment.

Such high hopes for a great new steak joint in Angel and am bitterly disappointed!

Starters were good, the rest not so. Soggy chips were one of many seriously over-priced/under-portioned sides. I could have counted the number of green beans on my fingers. Charging £2 for about 2 spoons of bearnaise sauce is outrageous. Particularly when it arrives unapologetically 10 minutes after the meal is served.

The ribeye was tasty but a few of my party sent onglets back as they weren't cooked as requested.

My coffee order was forgotten and I got the feeling the very average desserts were 'brought in' but maybe by this point I was looking for minus points.

It's amazing how much you can be won over with a warm smile and enthusiastic service but alas, our waitress was totally disinterested and at times condescending.

I'd tweeted first to ask if there was a discount for a soft opening since I noticed the website wasn't up yet and told no. Seriously, if this is them at their tip top impressive opening best, then frankly there is no hope.

Very disappointing. The walls are tiled and you feel a bit like you are sitting in an old school cafeteria. No fillet or cheese on the menu.

The upside is the service is good but I won't be back.

Such a shame. It's only been open for a short time but Meat People had a real opportunity to be Angel's first good steakhouse and in my opinion, they've wasted it.

I understand that there are always teething problems with a new restaurant, especially an independent one, but then what's the point of the "soft opening" stage, the two weeks that preceded our visit?

The staff were very friendly and accommodating on the phone. I thought we were in for a treat. They've still not removed some of the signing from when this was S&M cafe and I think that was the first indication that Meat People is nowhere near ready, on many levels.

Our waitress was friendly, if a little over zealous.

We were offered sparkling or still water. We chose tap water and found out later that we'd been charged £2 per jug. "Neighbourhood" restaurant, they say. Possibly in a neighbourhood where no one likes one another and curtains twitch constantly.

We said "no" to bread. We were given some. Through mistake rather than generosity. It was cold and hard.

The menu is small but has potential. Unfortunately that potential is not realised. Both our steaks (skirt and onglet) were lacking in flavour, the Béarnaise sauce was nothing more than butter with a bit of tarragon in, it evaporated on the plate and there wasn't much of it. Chips were warm at best.

If you're going to offer a small choice on the menu, that's fine with me. You just need to make sure that you do it all bloody well. There's no excuse not to.

We shared a rather odd filo pastry dessert which was a mish mash of flavours and textures.

Bill (inc.tip) was around the £55 mark.

As i say, a real shame that this place isn't up to scratch. There were so many small details that weren't right leaving a very sour taste in my mouth.

Save your money, go to Hawksmoor. Or one of the many restaurants in Angel who offer better at this price or less.
