Banana Tree (West Hampstead)

One of the finest casual diner I have come across. I have eaten around the world from New York to Bangkok and that makes me a fussy eater. Plus points :

1) extremely laid back and never felt rushed even when the place has a queue

2) great varied menu which means there is always something for everyone

3) the dishes I've tried so far has all been faultless (I've been there 4 times)

4) excellent atmosphere and service

trust me you will find my perception of this place spot on. Highly recommended, so go there.

Having eaten at The Banana Tree last night (mid-week April '10) I have to disagree with many of the most recent reviews. Our experience was that the friendly, discreet service was the only satisfactory element. The banana tree meal (which we both chose) in theory offers good value for money, comprising a curry of choice with side salad, rice, sweetcorn fritters and crackers for £9. That theory however did not reflect reality-the food was terrible. My partner had a chicken, ginger and shitake mushroom dish however the only chicken which featured was a few strands of unpleasant tasting leg meat. My lemon&coriander tofu was cloyingly sweet and tasted synthetic. A real diappointment. We won't be going again.

Best casual eatery in Islington. Great value, great atmosphere, easy on the pocket and much better than Wagamama although their set up is similar. Their variety of dishes describe as pan pacific and is well balanced, and everything here are fresh and healthy. Definitely one of my favourite haunts. Highly reccommended.

I was taken to the Banana Tree on Sunday 14/3/10, despite living locally I had never tried this restaurant before. I was totally bowled over with the flavours and quality of food. We all enjoyed our meal and my daughter asked if we could come back soon. The childrens meal is great value for money. The service was friendly and helpful. We will be going again and I will tell my family and friends to visit.

One of the best restaurants in the area! Excellent service, food, atmosphere and value for money. The restaurant is always busy (which adds to the atmosphere) but that does not have any negative affect on the service or quality of food. Highly recommended!

Lovely food-good value for money-horrible service and atmosphere!

Switched to take out there lately.Can't be bothered to keep paying for "optional" service charge for a service i never get!! Rather enjoy the food at home in front of TV without grumpy,incompetent people walking around not knowing what to do!(talking about staff working there!)Shame on you guys!

Horrible service!! I've been waiting with my friend for someone to take at least our drink orders for more than 20 min!! We were one of three tables in there!!! Wasn't even busy!Noone bothered as all staff was busy chatting and having laughs in bar area!

Didn't even had a chance to try food as we decided to leave... Went to Italian restaurant up the road.Had a fantastic evening there!

Dissapointed that didn't have a chance to try food in Banana Tree as heard that its really good!I can only hope that it's nothing to compare with competence of staff working there.

This is my favourite local restaurant in West Hampstead and I thought I'd write to give them my full support. Fantastic food and great service always!! Best dishes, Laksa, Blackened Grilled Pork, Lamb Curry. Also, their lamb wrap is wicked. Conclusion, this place serves delicious honest Asiatic food in funky atmosphere.
