i ate here last night and to tell the truth i can't comment on the food as it was so unmemorable i forget what i ate. it's all well to be organic etc. etc. but if an animal is treated well whilst alive then why give it no respect when it arrives in the kitchen. I am sure the Duke's heart is in the right place, but they really need to look after their business on every level. A competent kitchen team perhaps? Possibly a front of house team who are a little more attentive? Even a smile when incredibly busy would help. There are so many good pubs to eat in London that i am surprised people pack in to this place on most nights. I won't waste my money here again

I went to the Duke of Cambridge last night and my boyfriend and I were sorely disappointed. Firstly we sat down only to be told that we had to move as we were sitting in someone elses spot who dines there regularly. Then the waiter took forever to take our drinks order. In the meantime we found it very difficult to find anything inspiring on the menu. Organic does not have to mean vegetarian does it? So finally we ordered and while our mains of beef pie and lamb cutlet were fine they were nothing more. The portions are also quite small. Not once did anyone ask if everything was ok or to be honest even give us eye contact for two seconds. In fact we felt a little unwanted there. So we just had our mains and left. As expected nobody noticed us leaving and we didn't even get a goodbye. Seriously overrated place. Seriously over priced also.

Living round the corner I'm often finding myself eating here. I love the pub itself, great atmosphere and nice bright space.
My only problem is with the food, I'm happy to pay for good food but here the prices are a little out of sync with whats actaully delivered from a sometimes pretty uninspring menu. Generally underseasoned and far to towards bland I struggle to find a satisfactory dish on the menu.
Having said that the roasts are great but if the rest of the menu could deliver a couple of notches up, towards what you'd expect, the whole place would be great.
A point of note - you can eat upstairs at fifteen for the same price and I often do. Given the choice...

Visited the Duke of Cambridge on Sunday 22 April after walking past it on my way home from work every day. They had a refurbishment about 6 wks ago and it is absolutely fantastic now.
We sat in the main bar bit and I had salmon with 'leaves' which was a perfect size for those with small appetites. My other half had roast pork - such a big portion that he couldn't finish it all. Said it was divine though.
The service was speedy and the staff were friendly and attentive.
Very impressive - will definitely be returning.

We went there last night and I must admit that it is serioulsy overrated. I had fishcake with spinach and poached egg. It was not crispy on the outside and just warm, the spinach were plain boiled and the poached egg was hard boiled. We also ordered some mash on the side which came when our main course was almost finished. We then tried the bread and butter pudding which came as a solid block of white bread with some sultana - no custard, cream to stop us choking on the thing.
The staff were numerous and useless. The optional service came to 13 pounds!
Bring a jumper or two as the place is freezing.

Cannot applaud a recent visit enough, being a group of restaurant managers we always tend to pick holes wherever we go, but the food at The Duke of Cambridge was nothing short of sublime.
From the outstanding Luscombe organic cider, to the phenomenal roast beef and delightfully creamy fresh horseradish sauce our meal was one of the most pleasant I've ever had in London. Absolutely love the way the menu changes as you are stitting there, and provided much entertainment as we waited an hour to order due to two late friends, hoping that as the manager approached the chalkboard he wasn't about to rub out what you'd decided to order and barracking your mates when it happens to them! Finished of the meal with a hazelnut cake which was just out of this world.
One small point of contention was the service being of the 'have to get there attention if you want anything' variety rather than them being attentive, but with food this good it really didn't matter much.
I would heartily reccomend this place and have done repeatedly!

We went to a birthday lunch here recently, of twelve people who all arrived at different times, wanted different food, wine, billing, likes, dislikes - we were about as awkward a party as you can get. Through it all the staff were good humoured and helpful. The barman in particular was good fun.
We sat in the restaurant section at the back to eat, which is non-smoking - thank heaven, which is light and simply decorated, with the odd quirky twist.
The food was amazing. We ate three courses even though there was no possible need to when the portions were SO heroic. We just wanted to order more because it was all so delicious!!! Fish, meat, bread, butter, vegetables and puddings were all beautifully presented, solid, well-cooked good food. We didn't think it was over priced considering it's organic and a gastro-pub. And we'd happily have paid more. The wine was by far the best I've tasted in a long time - an organic dry white that was fresh and green and very very veryvery more-ish!! I planned my Hen Lunch here since then as I knew they'd be able to cope with all the demands.
Top restaurant, go soon and then go again very soon after, with your friends! Wish there were more places like it, it seems a tragedy that you have to travel so far to find a place that's non-smoking and does decent organic food in great surroundings.

Just been for lunch. £15 for scrawny chicken (which tasted of nothing) two small and undercooked roast potatoes and lots of red cabbage. The spaghetti was even worse. Seemingly by calling it organic they think its acceptable to charge very high prices for not very good food. We will not be going again (we live round the corner and used to really like this place).

OK, I love the fact that this place is organic/ethical/ non smoking. Love all that! But why oh why does Gastropub food have to be so pretentious and so messed up? What's wrong with keeping it pure and simple? Here's an example. I opted for fish yesterday and I knew it was going to be a bit weird. Sea bass on a bed of satay carrots with cauliflower & courgette tempura topped off with pickled fennel. I could hardly touch the carrots. The tempura lacked the lovely airy batter that tempura should consist of (so I will say it was just fried). Nice bit of seabass though, shame about the pickled fennel. Why try so hard? Apart from that, I don't mind paying more for organic produce but I didn't feel like I got really great value at this place. I think this place would be much better if the menu wasn't so pretentious.

This is a pub well worth supporting, especially if you have animal welfare in mind, as you can be sure that they go the right way about choosing their produce. Only their fish is not organic as that would involve them being intensively reared which is not part of the ethos. The food is homely and I haven't encountered anything that wasn't very good. There are nice British beers and cider on tap, as well as a good selection of wines and spirits. The interior is more pub than restaurant but it is tasteful and you can feel very relaxed. I would avoid Friday and Saturday nights as it is too busy and too smokey to eat, but with a smoking ban in Islington being enforced in January that should become less of a problem.
