our review

Nicola Horlick and Adam Byatt (Trinity, Bistro Union) have opened a new neighbourhood restaurant in Barnes. The head chef is Greig Hunter who spent three years at Trinity. Inspired by restaurants like Ottolenghi and The Modern Pantry, Georgina's serves salads, fresh fish, and chargrilled meats from the barbecue.

Tuesday, October 30, 2012 - My spaghetti with mussels was about as luxurious as a camp bed. The mussels were quite plump and fresh, as was the pasta, but there was just so little to lift it. I don't believe they'd even salted the water, there wasn't even a slick of fat to it and the flavours were dull. B had the crab linguine, which suffered all the same deficiencies and the added sorrow that the crab was nice but a little timorous...The funny thing is, there probably is a gap in the market for this diety, virtuous eating, where nothing tempts you into indulgence, and you walk out with a resolve as stiff as when you walked in. But I think there should at least be a warning on the door for the rest of us.

Come on Barnes, you're not skint, give this local venue the support it deserves! Go once or twice a fortnight with my son for an early supper, and it's always empty. Room maybe a little austere for evening trade, service generally affable but not always wildly professional, soft drinks and wine list interesting, very family/child friendly, food EXCELLENT: they buy very high quality produce and do nothing very complicated with it, much to their credit. Wonderful freshly made pappardelle with what the menu called "Bolognaise" - most definitely not, rather a sugo di arrosto, a staple of Italian home cooking never seen in the U.K. - shredded braised beef with its own juices and some finely diced vegetables, maybe the best pasta dish I've eaten in this country, a genuinely interesting, lightly dressed green salad and a chicken breast burger for the Boy only three or four million miles away from the Golden Arches for maybe two quid more. Yes, it's become a default family choice as we live nearby, and maybe I've become slightly biased/protective, but I've eaten some seriously good dishes here since they opened - a summer highlight was a brilliant salad of heirloom tomates, capers and olives, and another of whipped goat cheese, slightly candied walnuts and endives - all very simple, Alice Waters - y stuff, but actually bloody hard to get so right. So many new openings deserve to go tits up after two weeks but endure like bad smells, fuelled only by hype and big p.r. budgets, this needs cherishing.

Had lunch here a few weeks ago, nice interior, friendly staff and the food was very good. Went for the lobster burger which came with a massive corn on the cob, it was delicious. It has a more of a lunchtime feel to the place so I'm not sure what it would be like in the evening, but it will be a hit with the Barnes ladies who lunch.
