We live close to this place and i often walk past it on the way to the tube. Me and my girlfriend decided to try it out one friday night.
We were seated upstairs. The decoration was awful. the suspended ceiling felt very low, was filthy and looked so cheap. As was the furniture and paint work.
we waited 10 minutes before anyone came over at all and when they did we ordered two beers. We got talking and soon 20 minutes had passed without any service at all. I got up to complain and fairly promptly our beers arrived. it was another significant wait until our food arrived, by which time i just wanted to get out of there.
The food was mediocre at best. to be honest i can't remember what i had. I'd like to say it was cheap but i can't. it wasn't expensive thats the best i can do.

Incredible value for money. The food is as good quality as Wagamama's but without the cost. The only bad point is the upstairs seating area needs a major revamp. I highly recommend this for a cheap meal when passing through Mile End.

I like matsu. The food is good; ok it's not going to transport you in the heart of Japan but the sushis are very nice, the rice dishes are ok and the ramen not bad at all. But they do suffer from the lack of legal tuna on the market. I have been a few times when they didn't have any and that was a shame really. I personally love their gyosa and their roe sushi. You can easily eat a full dinner for about £10 if you're careful. The service is poor sometimes though. The staff don't always understand what you want and that can be very dissapointing when you get something you didn't want. Plus one time there was a problem with the bill in a big group and the overcharge has been taken out of the waitress' wages which i found really harsh.
Don't get me wrong, Matsu is a great place for its location. In the heart of mile end you find some decent healthy food that contrasts with the vast amount of chip shops and greasy chinese take-aways. Overall it's a good address but, to my opinion, it would never work in central london. Matsu's low points are manageurial, it's not the food or the price.

Matsu used to be a decent resturant a couple of years ago. However it has changed chef and has been pretty average for a year. I went there recently and was delighted to see the menu had changed. However the food was not great. The gyoza dumplings tasted as though they had been deep fried straight from the freezer, while the katsu-don - which was the best in London a couple of years ago - seems to have lost it's edge and become a smaller dish.
Matsu is what I would call somewhere to visit if you want an introduction to Japanese food, but don't expect the real McCoy!

This is a fantastic restuarant. I have been to lots of Japanese restaurants who either get their traditional hot dishes right OR the sushi but in this palce both are fantastic. Service is excellent and really helpful if you fancy a type of dish but not sure of the name. The staff are wonderful here as is the food. I will definitely return time and again to Matsu.

i have been taking my family on special occasions to Matsu for years. If you want to spend a fortune and get so so service, go to wagamamma's.If however you prefer smiling faces, beautiful food, amazing prices and a very special experience . . .come to Matsu!

Whenever I fancy a healthy take away I pop into Matsu as I live nearby. The food is very good and always prepared very quickly. The staff are also very friendly and I enjoy sitting on their comfy sofas whilst they prepare my take away. Highly recommend the place.

We went there one evening for a meal. Not many choices, chief looks like chinese, one indian kitchen staff & one cannot tell (maybe east europe)... the food was poor. They only gave one tear-drop size of wasape in the bento box rice. When you asked for more, they handout a small dish with one tear-drop size of wasape for 50p.. I warn anyone to go there to dine.. Be careful - if you choose a curisine - they are only good if their people go there.. This Japanese restaurant has no Japanese customers..

I loved the peaceful, relaxing atmosphere. Friendly, polite staff and a personal touch. For me, it's perfect for a light meal and a few of the new amazing cocktails after work!
