our review

The Mandeville Hotel in Marylebone has relaunched their restaurant as Reform Social & Grill. Taking inspiration from classic British gentlemans' clubs, the restaurant serves dishes like pheasant Scotch eggs, Blythburgh pork chop with macaroni cheese, and Fisherman's Pie. There are also some unusual bar snacks (duck faggots, anyone?) and a dedicated pudding menu featuring retro classics like Sussex Pond pudding and traditional sticky toffee.

John Walsh - 8/15

Saturday, July 28, 2012 - There's nothing wrong with the food, even if it's a little hit-and-miss. My Duck Scotch Egg was heaven, the duck egg's creamy yolk creeping like sunrise across the rough casing of black pudding and oats. I finished both halves feeling as though I'd consumed an epic breakfast. A mini-bowl of apple sauce was redundant, though. I mean – apple with egg? Simon's Cornish mackerel lacked plumpness and excitement, but its accompanying army of squid roundels was slightly and tantalisingly smoked, and blended well with sea pickle and watercress...There's a lot to relish in this protein-heavy, clubby slab of Olde England. But the management has its work cut out in bringing its delights to public attention.

We have been to Reform Social & Grill few days ago with my girlfriend for lovely dinner. I am glad I chose this venue for its comforting and relaxed atmosphere.

When we arrived for our reservation, we felt welcomed with honest smile of receptionist.

We started at the bar where we were greeted by bartender, he was just amazing. For my date he suggested their signature Edwin Chadwick's Cup with Gin, cucumber, elder flower and Champagne and she loved it. I had perfectly prepared Negroni witch is one of my favorite drinks however this one was just the top.

When we moved to restaurant we sat in very comfortable booth and ordered our dinner and bottle of wine. Our waiter suggested great and fairly priced Cabernet Sauvignon and shortly after we get our starters. Lobster cocktail with crab toast was fresh and delicious and Garden salad with crispy bacon as well.

For main my girlfriend had Shellfish stew with half of lobster, crab and razor clams. She insisted that I have to try. Not being a fan of seafood myself it took little time to persuade me, but luckily I agreed. It was done perfectly and the sauce was just amazing. I chose Hanger steak with Hertfordshire snails and hand cut chips. The steak was made in Jasper oven on 350 degrees that is made to keep all the juice inside as we've been informed by our waiter when we ordered. He was absolutely right. I did not have such a good cut of meat in long time. And the snails were amazing match with right amount of garlic.

As dessert we shared Sticky Toffee pudding which was just right portion for two. Great tasting rich pudding with clotted cream ice cream was served with smile and it was just perfect finish to lovely evening.

To sum my experience. Service was fantastic. Welcoming, personal and attentive just the right amount. Decoration makes you feel comfortable and not overwhelmed with right lighting and music that is not too loud nor too quiet. We definitely be back soon when we are in the area even if it's going to be just for couple of cocktails after afternoon shopping. I recommend to everyone to do the same.
