what the critics say

The Independent

Tracey MacLeod

Saturday, August 04, 2012 - Sweetcorn chowder, too often a one-note blast of creamy sweetness, was well-anchored with salt and spice, and swirls of sour cream and chilli oil to keep things interesting. And Shrimpy's must-have dish – the soft-shell crab burger that had its own Twitter following within days – lived up to its rep, the soft sesame bun char-striped from the grill, the crab's distinctive flavour shining through a golden puffy batter. But tuna tostada – fried tortilla decorated with raw tuna, shredded lettuce, avocado and tendrils of fried onion – seemed to have been put together purely for visual effect, the tostada itself as chewy as an old toenail.

Telegraph

Zoe Williams - 2/5

Tuesday, July 24, 2012 - The burger just tasted like bap and batter; the only reason to believe there was a soft-shell crab inside it was that slightly eerie texture that feels like crunching through a small creature's bones. We had some humita, a sort of maize porridge that tasted like the chowder, only more doughy and pre-digested, and some salsa creole, which was almost 100 per cent raw onion...There was nothing horrible, and certainly nothing that you'd turn your nose up at, especially if you were hungry. But it felt cynical, without passion in the kitchen for anything except a buck and a buzz.

Great fun venue. Food was excellent and the concept was really strong.

My friend's softshell crab burger was a particular highlight. I think I had a skirt steak with a salsa, which was also really good.

Peanut butter & banana dessert was pretty special, too.

Liked the addition of pisco sours on the drinks menu.

Seating was a little cramped but that's a small price to pay for such good food and a fun experience, eating in an old petrol station.

Odd to think that Bagley's and The Cross was just over the road once...

Thought it was good value for money, too.

Fantastic night at Shrimpy's yet again, great food (steak, humita and octopus all brilliant), wine and service. Definitely the place to be in London at the moment, and what a location!

Could not recommend this place any higher...

really enjoyed shrimpys been a few times now.

the food is fresh and well executed, the menu is more californian than mexican, though their guacamole is very good.

wine list isn't huge and very American but has a reasonable choice at half sensible prices. the service is excellent , the staff are very good. It does get busy but the counter is for walk ins and if there is just a few of you it is a good choice.

could do with some high end spirits and cocktails as so many places have seemed to have raised their game these days but really that's just being picky.

the architects have done a stunning job on what was once probably the busiest BP petrol garage for clubbers with the cross and bagleys once just behind.

I really enjoyed my first trip to Shrimpy's yesterday evening. I was particularly delighted with the cool air conditioning after traversing the hot pavements of Kings Cross to get there. The space was much smaller than I had imagined so I would think that in time, getting a booking will not be so easy. It was already packed when we arrived at 7.30pm. The menu was not wide-ranging but suffiently varied. The food was borderline nouvelle cuisine in terms of portion size but after 3 courses we were all perfectly satisfied. The food was of excellent quality - delicious, peppered calamari and salt cod croquettes for starters; monkfish with chilli and soft crab burgers for the main course; a selection of side dishes included string fries, a tiny but tasty green salad and an unusual creamed corn dish. Desserts of poached quince and creme fraiche, a refreshing medley of pineapple crisps, fruit and cream and a white chocolate sundae with biscotti and brownie pieces for texture. The service was attentive and friendly and judging by the fashionable nature of our fellow diners, not to mention the arty stencils on the walls, this eclectic eatery is bound to become a trend of its own! I will definitely be returning.
