Restaurateur Rebecca Mascarenhas and chef Philip Howard have relaunched Sonny's in Barnes as Sonny's Kitchen. The pair also own Kitchen W8 in Kensington, which earned its first Michelin star in 2011. Sonny's Kitchen is open for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch and represents Howard's first real venture into less formal, classical cooking.

It is OK but no more. The place lacks atmosphere and the pale tiles on the side wall remind me of a public lavatory. In the evening, the front of the restaurant looks about as depressing as is possible.

The food is acceptable, the service is OK and it is convenient. If I had to drive to get there, I wouldn't bother.

However, I am clearly in a minority - it seems pretty busy and it is by no means cheap.

I don't normally review restaurants unless I've eaten there recently, but since its revamp I haven't been tempted to go back at all .

This used to be a place with some aspirations towards preparing interesting , even on occasion a little unusual food. It was certainly on our radar for a saturday lunch a few times a year, and frankly we enjoyed every single time we came, albeit it was best part of an hour to get there from Berkshire. When the same team revitalised 11 Abingdon Road into Kitchen W8 they did a great job and we hoped for the same here.

So what have they done? Well from what I can see they've truned it into an upmarket burger bar/brunch place and the sort of food we went to eat has disappeared without trace . What they serve now wouldn't be worth driving from Chiswick for (as you can find this sort of food locally anywhere) never mind Berkshire. Totally confuses action with progress IMO. Sorry but they've messed up. They couldn't even get a website online for ages after the refurb.

The scores are simply because the site requires them. The review is there in the hope that someone sees this and decides to do it over again.

The decor is so impressive. But it has nothing else. Service was incredible slow. Food was really disappointing. French fries are better in a Burger King than there. Ribs were tasteless and fowl so salty. I have never been so frustrated with a restaurant. Mr Howard should change all management.

Price list looks like a joke when we compare with the quality of service and food.

The last time we went to the old Sonny's, which used to be a favourite, I said 'never again' - it had become very overpriced for reasonable food and amateurish service in only a relatively attractive series of rooms.

We have, since reopening, gone to one of the 50% off trial suppers with a couple of friends. It is not fair to judge on that basis, and Giles Coren obviously loved his meal there, but the service remained amateurish and the change in decoration had scarcely made it more cosy.

However, it is local, so we will try once more, once I have saved up for what remains a pretty expensive evening out. Let's hope that the service makes it worth the money. When will patrons realise that the majority of people go out to dinner to have a relaxing time being well looked after; the food is seldom the key ingredient in a successful evening out.
