Guy Dimond - 4/5

Monday, August 06, 2012 - The small-eats menu also looks to the US for inspiration, with hot dogs, sliders (mini burgers) and witty side dishes such as devils on horseback (bacon-wrapped prunes) and bone marrow popcorn. Our trio of sliders and hot dog were juicy and appealing, both the frankfurter and the burgers having been made in-house. The spirits list seems limited to some American whiskeys and a mint julep, so cocktail connoisseurs should look elsewhere. Upstairs, in fact...Perhaps its un-hip location will be enough to keep the hordes away, and preserve its friendly, neighbourhood feel - we certainly hope so, because at the moment it's definitely the top dog in north London.

This Is London - 2/5

Thursday, August 02, 2012 - From the dogs and burgers, I opted for the signature Dachsund, a beef wiener protruding from a pert little sub, garnished with sauerkraut and ketchup. It was a 12-step sausage. When I first bit into the casing, the bursting sensation of smoky, salty fat drew a moan of gratification. The second bite forced me to confront its worrying, loose texture. By the third or fourth bite, I was powerless to stop, even though it was by now reminiscent of sucking out the contents of a fisherman’s tackle box from a verruca sock. I have since gone through remorse, acceptance, etc, and now remember that sausage only with a sad shudder.

Went to the upstairs cocktail bar for a friend's birthday party. The rude waitress just scowled and paid us no attention till some guys in our group turned up. Finally we ordered some of their funky sounding cocktails (served in teapots, with dry ice, rose petals, etc). A few more friends arrived, and we were told our group was too large. We should have just left there and then, but we politely finished our £10 cocktails and paid. I have never experienced such rude service - they could have accommodated our group over two tables but didn't even try. We paid over £100 for 15min drinks in this awful awful place. Don't bother going.

I have never received such a cold welcome upon arriving at a restaurant, I was greeted aggressively by the staff behind the bar as if I shouldn't have been there. They obviously feel like they're too alternative to serve people in Hampstead, I'm sure they'd like to work somewhere in Soho but you wouldn't get away with attitude problems like that anywhere in London. The girl behind the bar scowled at us everytime we passed her and couldnt muster anything but contempt. As a waiter myself I have never experienced anything like it, even from customers. Will never be going back there and I urge anyone thinking about it to make the trip in to town instead and eat at the any of the other superior American burger/ cocktail restaurants. I know I'm not alone in this view as a quick google of Dach & Sons will show how many others have been offended by the staff there, kick them out and build a new team who get along and want to be there.

So I decided to have my leaving do from work at Dach & Sons. Wasn't sure how many people would turn up, as it was the week before Xmas.

You are not allowed to reserve, but after some sweet talking we managed to book a booth upstairs in advance. We turn up at 6pm to an empty restaurant downstairs and an empty 'private' room upstairs in Flat P. Unfortunately slightly more people turned up than anticipated, meaning we effectively took over the bar upstairs, but never mind, there was not another customer in sight and we were very happy to buy a considerable number of the £11 cocktails on offer.

So I really liked the decor, the ambiance and the interesting cocktail menu, but

what i didn't like was the two hour turn around time to get a drink, or the pretentious attitude of the staff.

We transformed an empty bar into a bustling social arena but we were made to feel completely unwelcome by the staff. We were repeatedly told that we were taking up spaces for other customers, who turned out to be non-existent.

When we asked to pay for our very considerable bill (£1000+) we were told by the bar man that he just wanted us to leave: -this was a group of 20-30 well behaved medical professionals, who would have stayed all night had our custom been appreciated.

If you are thinking of coming to this establishment, and you do not consider yourself to be a pretentious idiot, then I suggest that you look elsewhere amongst the many options in Hampstead, where your custom will be welcomed.

This bar must be somebody's hobby as it is not being run with any semblance of a business or money making ethic.

I cannot comment on the quality of the hot dogs downstairs but to be honest I wouldn't bother, it is completely over rated, go to Pizza Express next door and you will have a lovely time.

I thought I would give this trendy looking American styled place a try.

First attempt, the place was empty at like 4pm. I popped in and announced my order, having read the menu on the door and jonesing for a chili dog. The lady very nicely responded and then I sat, awkwardly, for 15 minutes while various staff hung around and ignored me, said hello, or leaned against the wall and stared.

Finally, I asked if perhaps the kitchen didn't get my order, and the response was "what order?" The poor girl thought I had seriously come in for a glass of water and to chat her up about American junk food nostalgia.

Second time, I stopped in and made sure to confirm my order for a corn dog. I am so disappointed. This was truly the worst rendition of a corn dog I've ever seen. It was... A homemade vegetarian paste of eggplant and sweet corn. A colossal waste of £8. I still had my junk food craving and got a filet-o-fish from McDonald's... and that made me feel really really dirty and bad.

I would recommend you dont visit this place. The attitude of the staff is terrible, they speak down to you and compared themselves to Soho House on more than one occasion. They eventually let my party into the bar but would not do our table service until 'we were all sat down in a controlled manner' so as 'not to disturb the ambience'. When we were sat down, we were given a talking to of how to behave (this was to a mature group of people wanting a pleasant night away from work/kids). It was ludicrous when one of my friends was latched on for daring to stand up in the bar area (to go to the toilet). If you want to be spoken to rudely and treated like a child by people younger than you, go here. If you want a pleasant fun night out in Hampstead with good staff, go to one of the many gastropubs such as The Horseshoe.

I personally don't recommend this place, I've been there twice already since they opened up and have been disappointed both times. I live in Hampstead so I thought I'd give them a second chance given that my first visit was during their first few weeks but I'm sorry to say that the second visit was even worse than the first.

I agree with the other reviewers that the staff are unhelpful and have an unnecessary attitude at times and everything else (eg food and ambience) is just so underwhelming that makes the whole experience not worth the visit. Try the nice local gastropubs nearby instead, you'll definitely have a better time.

We're locals and we were excited to read about this place. first time the service was too slow, took them 30 minutes just to take the order despite us mentioning that we are in a rush!

Second time we visited the place the staff were rude, they weren't full but none of the available tables on the ground floor could fit us all so I suggested that we get a drink and wait upstairs (at the roof terrace) and a waiter who greeted us said he would pop upstairs and let us know once a table became available...

As soon as I approached the bar to get a bottle a rude lady came and said we don't have reservation policy and either you have to wait here (on the ground floor standing for god knows for how long) or we can't keep a table for you! I explained to her that there is no place to stand comfortably and that her colleague kindly suggested that he will call us. she kept repeating herself with a really rude tune that all three floors run separately and they can't do anything about it!

Anyway after along, rude exchange, we walked out and won't be back for good. (not that they cared to lose 6 customers like that)

This attitude is not even accepted in a busy soho bar, Burger & Lobster they take your name and number and they call you. these people are not even full enough to justify these rules and conditions specially in a neighbourhood like Hampstead that people go out for a relaxed atmosphere.

We had a really bad evening at this place. Firsly we were told there were no tables and that we could wait in the bar, but we would have to keep popping down to see if a table was available as no one could let us know or even put our name down on a list. When my boyfriend had popped down to the restaurant for the 3rd or 4th time, he finally found a free table. We had to wait 45 mins for our food and it was so disappointing. The 3 little burgers were dry and not hot. The burger buns crumbled as you ate them, they were so dry. The rest of the food was all so average, that we wondered why we had bothered to wait so long. All in all, just a very hyped up "concept" which really has no concept. Just slow service and dry, average burgers and hot dogs.... :(

As a local in Hampstead Dach & Sons is just the place Hampstead needs. We are sick and tired of all the chains in the area so Dach & Sons is a breath of fresh air. The food is of the highest quality using meat from a local butcher (so i was told). It's also a very child friendly restaurant, my children love the mini burgers ( sliders)

Have heard so much about Purl Marylebone so can't wait to try out Purl NW when me and my husband get a free moment.

Cool venue and much needed bar in Hampstead. Trying slightly too much to be like Meat Liquor but it doesn't pull of the coolness quite as well.

The meat wasnt great and was a let down but the chips and tiny portion of Frickles (meat liquor have much bigger portions) were delicious.

With Gaucho so close I think I will stick to a buger from there in future - or even Mcdonalds for that matter!
