Samba Brands Management has opened Duck & Waffle on the 40th floor of the Heron Tower. The restaurant is open 24/7 and serves British and European dishes like Old Spot pork pie, British seafood pot roast, and a decadent foie gras 'All Day Breakfast'. A special late night menu is served from 2am to 6am. The venue itself features an open kitchen, 24-seater chef bar, and floor-to-ceiling windows offering views across London.

Tuesday, October 02, 2012 - The menu talks a good game and then, inevitably I suppose, the food arrives and blows it...The restaurant has been designed for people who want to be seen in this kind of place, and they deserve one another. But I've had more inspiring food – character, taste – from a bag of nuts.

Sunday, September 02, 2012 - There was a smoked haddock scotch egg with a curried mayonnaise which was a cute riff on kedgeree, and knobbly limbs of grilled octopus with bits of chorizo and caper. There was a bowl of mussels and clams in a broth to be spilt down your pink TM Lewin shirt and a vibrant, zippy tomato salad with the word "heritage" in the title, which I'll forgive because the ingredients were so bang on. Best of all was a tiny burger of Herdwick mutton, with that funky meat-on-the-turn flavour you get from big-bollocked animals who have lived on a windblown hillside.

The view, obviously, is amazing. Service was fine. Pleasantly surprised by the food. Wasn't keen on the crab toast or the mackerel tartare. The rest (of which we saw pretty much the entire menu) was quite good. Tomato salad and Ox cheek doughnuts were probably the highlights. Of the big mains, the roast chicken with mushrooms stood out for me. Cocktails came with a bit of theatre, as is the current vogue. Nice though, particularly the G&T and the Manhattan. Wine list is a bit of a shocker, extremely expensive save two very cheap bottles. Both of which it should be said were pefect at £25 and £30, at least for the reds. Ended up paying £60 a head, but we were full and happy and taking the location (and ride in the lift) into account, that is a fair price. Great place to bring out of towners.

much better than I expected and fantastic views .

It's almost worth going for the lift ride alone, not sure how long it will be open 24 hours but when i took some friends from out of town for a Saturday lunch I was very pleasantly surprised & impressed.

Roast chicken was excellent, they had some good wines on the list (cheaper that at a ramsay restaurant ) and the service was quick and attentive. I wouldn't have the tuna again but it was certainly fresh enough to be served raw.

A great place to see london from and not ridiculously expensive.

I had booked a table for 2 almost 2 weeks in advance at SushiSamba. When I arrived at the door they told me that SushiSamba was reserved for an event (!!!). I obviously vigorously complained and asked to speak to the manager who offered me a table instead at Duck & Waffle. I accepted with some reservations and in the end we sat on a table on the 40th floor next to the window.

The view was really spectacular. But that was it. The food was terrible in my opinion. Only the scallops were good. The raw tuna portion was ridiculous; the portion was composed by 6 raw tuna slices not much thicker than a paper sheet and they came at just below 10gbp. The duck tasted more or less like a mcdonald's chicken nugget. The Riesling was pretty expensive for its quality. The cocktails instead were ok.

All in all I will never go back. And I won't try SushiSamba after the very poor reservation management.

I have to agree with some of the reviewers here in that it's not cheap - in particular the wine list which is eye-watering to look at - but the food more than makes up for it. Although their signature dish is the duck & waffle it ought to be the foie gras 'all day breakfast' which is ingenious in design and heavenly to taste. The crab on toast was light, fresh and well seasoned. The rabbit rillettes were quite heavy and a little bland. The arancini was excellent.

The views are amazing so do ask if you can get a window seat. Avoid the bar as it's full of loud, brash suits which is a shame as it looks great as well but I guess you don't get to choose who goes there!

Very much enjoyed the Duck and Waffle experience. The view is incredible and an evening visit at this time of year takes in day light, sunset, and nightime - all of which are terrific.

Was disappointed by the cocktail - had read some good reviews and ordered a dark and stormy, waiting for some theatrics. it was served in a bottle in a paper bag... whoop-de-doo... though did taste good.

Scallop with apple, lime and black truffle, was delicious - though more a canape than a starter.

Crispy pigs ears were the best of their kind with the right level of chew vs crunch.

Cod tongues were fine but tartare sauce was lovely

Mutton slider - delicious but so tiny!

Sole - perfectly cooked but nothing special

I enjoyed the all day breakfast with beautiful fried/coated black pudding balls, and foie gras being the defining elements for me. Bacon was a bit so-so.

Finally a mention to the outstanding service - right level of informality and attention.

Would i go back? Definitely. It's fun, friendly and open all the time. What's not to like?

Enjoyed the food, especially the now famous pigs ears and the signature duck and waffle dish, but nothing was out of the ordinary and prices are high. On our visit the other diners were nearly all groups of banker types, though maybe this is different in the evening. Overall the food is tasty but if I went back I would just go for cocktails and to enjoy the view and the lift!

what the bloggers say

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

Thursday, November 08, 2012 - Snacks of crispy pigs ears and battered cods tongues get the party started, and scallop with apple to follow acts as the most decadent palate cleanser...One thing not be missed is the dish that the restaurant is named after, the Duck and Waffle. A seemingly strange combination, but I am a big admirer of sweet and salty combos and this dish combines both those tastes with an excellent confit duck sat on a soft waffle, and topped with a fried duck egg. The best bit, however, is the little pot of mustard maple syrup which has to be dumped all over the dish for maximum effect.

Friday, November 02, 2012 - The Spicy Ox Cheek Doughnut is a work of genius. Easily the best thing I ate. A cricket ball sized globe, dusted with what tasted like a combination of sugar and sweet paprika and stuffed with shredded oxtail meat. On the side for dipping, apricot jam...Duck & Waffle doesn't take itself too seriously, despite it’s central, city ‘spank the expense account’ location. It’s actually good fun. The menu itself is interesting, studded throughout with particularly filthy treat dishes, which if you’re anything like me when it comes to ordering, may lead you down an incredibly unbalanced route of sickly cholesterol heavy sweetness.

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - Finally, the signature dish. Fried duck leg with fried duck egg, waffle and a small pot of mustard maple syrup. On first impressions, it certainly seemed like a step too far, but as I worked my way through the dish, I was pleasantly surprised with how the combination of flavours complimented one another. The duck leg was probably over fried, it tasted really quite tough and dry, but it soften considerably when slathered with lots (and lots) of syrup. And that’s when the dish really came alive, syrup and duck yolk was an ace combo. Maybe just a little overwhelming, but nevertheless, as an experience, it was immensely enjoyable. Like the scallop dish, this was fun, unique and delicious.
