The team behind cocktail institution Callooh Callay have opened Beard to Tail, a new bar and restaurant, in Shoreditch. In addition to some suitably creative cocktails, the Curtain Road restaurant serves dishes like pulled beef featherblade and the 'Rumpie-Pumpie for 2' - slow-roasted Old Spot pork rump with a sage and wild garlic crust and homemade apple sauce.

Sunday, November 04, 2012 - We order a half-rack of ribs, which come with a thin, bitter dipping sauce. In a town which has finally got a handle on real barbecue these are a dismal offering: a big whack of sweet and salt and not much else. If they went near a smoker rather than the oven, it's not obvious. The bone marrow dish is much worse. The marrow/herb mixture is so dry and powdery you don't know whether to eat it or snort it; the mix is stuffed inside lengths of sawn bones which are clearly reused time and again. Worse still is a feeble portion of overcooked and under-seasoned duck livers on toast from what looks like sliced bread.

Saturday, November 03, 2012 - Angie's rump steak was charred and textured to perfection, the horseradish cream nicely judged. A side order of bubble-and-squeak was soon demolished. Bone marrow and watercress, however, was dry and unappetising. My sweet-cured saddleback pork chop was lovingly cooked, nicely flavoured with sage and cockles and scattered with slices of apple; having already had apple slices with my starter, I'd have preferred a purée, but you don't argue with the management in such a hard-nut environment.

The food is a touch hit and miss but no way as bad as jay rayner described in his funny review.

A big group of us went, I had the tartar which was good if not quite as well chopped or lean as I like it but decent flavour, then the ribs which were pretty good, though have had better. Some of the other dishes my friends had looked a bit poorly presented and not that appetising.

Great cocktails though below average wine list with not one Pinot noir from anywhere on the list.

Service was really good and the place has a nice relaxed vibe.

If I lived local I would go but not in a hurry to go back.

We came for the ribs as we saw them on food spotting and we were not disappointed. They were epic. Such big portions we struggled to finish the whole lot. We sat at the front and the barman made an exception for us to have their restaurant menu as they usually wouldn't let us eat from it as it was too late at night but so glad he let us. They were so so busy and although the barman couldn’t look after us very well he was so knowledgeable and friendly I would definitely go back on a Tuesday or Wednesday night. Great food great vibe, slightly slow service but was more than accommodating.

Incredibly disappointing.

The menu looked so amazing but in reality it was very unexciting and very poor value for money.

The staff are so lovely and attentive and the venue is nice, it's purely the food that lets it down. The shrimp starter was actually laughable, 3 king prawns fresh out of a supermarket packet on a couple of lettuce leaves...

The pork was incredibly dry and steak was tough.

I was really looking forward to this place but would not go back or recommend sadly.

Such a shame.

Overall the Beard to Tail is on par with, if not better than, St. John. In my view the dishes are more interesting and they are a lot cheaper. I also preferred the ambience, as it is more relaxed. The only thing to watch out for is the service, which was patchy, although this could just be down to it being new staff in a new restaurant and will probably improve over time. I just hope they stop cutting your food up.

Absolutely lovely. Great food, (the ribs and the rumpy something or another) great wine, (the malbec) great service, (friendly, patient and excited) and great cocktails ( the hedgerow) oh and the enormous sundae which is to share......also great. We trekked over from south west London and had a great time, all in all a place where you would like to kill some time, and eat some meat.
