Thursday, February 07, 2013 - I’ve come to try the chef’s Shoreditch special of lamb raan bun. The meat is marinated in chilli, garlic and ginger, slow cooked with spices then hand-pulled and served in a soft sourdough roll (it’s also served as a whole leg for two to share). It’s the Indian version of the sort of pulled barbecue meat buns you find at places such as Pitt Cue Co and it’s delicious. Go to Dishoom with a bunch of mates, get stuck in to the pricey booze (nearly a fiver for a bottle of beer) and order undemanding but appealing dishes and you’ll have a whale of a time – albeit in a high-street chain sort of way.

Wednesday, October 31, 2012 - Sit in the basement dining room and you can watch the Indian chefs at work. Our seekh kebabs arrived well spiced, the minced lamb juicy, served piping hot from the grill. Many more distinctively Bombay dishes are on the menu, including bhel (a spicy puffed-rice snack) and pau bhaji (spicy vegetables in a bread roll). More modern creations are there too, including the lamb raan bun, which owes more to the current barbecue and burger craze in London than it does to Mumbai.

Cheese and Biscuits - 7/10

Monday, November 26, 2012 - Lamb raan bun was Dishoom's version of a crowd-pleasing house burger, supplied with matchstick fries and a decent slaw. The filling wasn't lamb mince but powerfully-spiced shredded shoulder (I think) and was very decent. Black Dhal was a house speciality from Covent Garden and was just as good here, buttery and rich and just thick enough to scoop up with the flaky roomali roti. Top winter food...If there's one criticism of Dishoom it's that everything is just that little bit outside good value. And the premium is even more glaring in Shoreditch where (lest we forget) Brick Lane is mere moments away.
