Base Bistro Bar (Baker Street)

Dinner a few nights ago. Service was good and competent (not excellent, but certainly better than many places). Place was only 1/3 full though had a mixed crowd of young and old.

The food was variable. Lamb shank just melted in my mouth and was delicious but not quite as much food as I'd expected for almost £15. The cheese platter for dessert was not quite as good - it was just OK. Coffee was nice.

Would I come back - yes, absolutely, if I was in the area and looking for somewhere to eat.

Would I make a special effort to go there? I'm not sure.

I read so many good reviews & then saw one average one. I thought i must try this out to see who is right & who is wrong.

Having spent the last 45 years eating in all kinds of restaurants throughout the world, be it the great & also the bad, i think i have a good idea of what IS good food & service.

We arrived at Base (3 of us), on a rather wet & dull Monday eve, & were imediately greeted by a warm & friendly member of staff (wearing black, i assume that she was the manageress). Throughout the meal she & her staff were attentive towards us & our fussy requirements.

So to the food, i can only say what a delight it is in London to find truely fresh ingredients cooked a la minute. I can highly recomend the warm goats cheese starter that just melts beautifully, For mains my Sea Bass, was better than any i have had on the coast of the Med' whilst my wifes Lamb Shank was pure butter in the mouth. Desserts were historic. I also tested them on their wines & they seem to know there stuff.

So my vote goes to the majority who seem to favour Base - We'll also be back !!!

Dinner tonight with a couple of foodies to sample the overall score of 9.5, must be good; no,no, no. Food was bland and under seasoned; amateurish to say the least. The mixed fish grill for two was pathetic and the minute steak; size-wise was minute. The website suggested the happy hour was between 5.45pm till 6.45pm, the staff and management suggested we must have been born the day before as no such thing or offers ever existed in their history of trading! £30 a head is pretty poor value. Service was otherwise attentive.

Having tried all the various high st players for my lunches - i have just found Base opp the side exit of Baker st tube. The food is fresh, tasty and incredibly good value. I just wish they would do a home delivery service so i can get through their vast menu.

The menu has a really wide choice and the quality of the cooking is consistently first class. We often take friends with us, and everyone always finds one of their favourite dishes on the menu.Staff are friendly and helpful, and the prices really reasonable. It's also nice to find a wine list with a good selection of interesting bottles at sensible prices. Best to book, particularly on a Friday or Saturday evening. We live locally and have been eating here at least twice a month for years - and we've never had a bad meal.

This is without a doubt my favourite restaurant....the food is amazing and the staff are very efficient and friendly! They prepare your food to every requirement - no matter how fussy you are, the chef must be very imaginative and uses a variety of seasonings and sauces!!

Excellent value for money and a really friendly laid back atmosphere!!

Definitely reccommend!

A potential supplier took me to Base and I've been there 3 times since - its REALLY good value for money. Looks a little cafe like from the outside, but the atmosphere is calm and informal, great for business lunches. Great menu - good fish as well am plenty of meat options, really well cooked side orders, nice wines and all reasonably priced. I recommend the eggs benedict!

i live close to Baker Street and i often go to Base, it is the best on Baker Street, the food is always very good and fresh, the service is just excellent and the staff knows how to make people really confortable. I JUST LOVE IT AND STRONGLY RECOMMEND IT to anyone who want great food for great value.

I went to Base last night to catch up with an old friend who I hadn't seen for ages. We had a fabulous evening and would highly recommend it. The staff were lovely, helpful, genuine, the food was (I must admit, quite surprisingly) very good - perfectly cooked, just pink, duck breast with a thick crispy layer of fat in a creamy, understated mushroom sauce with world-class mash...My tiny friend polished off a huge sirloin in garlic butter, and a big pile of perfect chips. Good value too - £50 each, including service - and we had a bottle of Champagne and several large gins. Big thumbs-up.

Went here last night, a Saturday, following reviews on this site and sooooo glad I did. The staff were attentive and friendly, no prblems being seated, and the food was great. Excellent portions and cooked to perfection. One of our party ordered their burger, asked how they would liked it cooked, ordered medium rare and delivered as asked, superb. The specials of the day are a real treat too. Chocolate pudding to die for as well. What a find! I would happily recomend this to anyone. We were even offered a extra chair at our table for our shopping!
