I love the fact that there are so many Dutch people in De Hems! Most of the time I go there I can have a chat with a Dutch member of staff and if you've been away for a long time it's nice to eat some Dutch snacks. Plus all my non-Dutch friends love the place as well!

Come here for the Dutch snacks which I miss from home, ie. kroketten and bitterballen. Beware though, the chips (frites) are not Dutch but British (slightly too thick), but the frites saus more than makes up for this. Would not recommend this for a full dinner though.
Also, would prefer see less Dutch people there... reminds of why I left in the first place!

This was just the best evening in years!!
I have only been to Hems once before for a quick drink and some Dutch snacks (frikandel and kroketten) and that all was fine but this Saturday 28th April they had their Queensday special night. Brilliant atmosphere, everyone singing along with Dutchs song they cannot possibly have heard before if they were not Dutch. Top marks for staff who did a special party version of Head Shoulders Knee and Toe on the bar!!

Have not been here for food, but spent a hilarious night in here. Nice bar staff and a good beer selection. Watch out for the 7%ers though...!

Cannot believe the review below! I am Dutch, and go here very often for a taste of home.
The food is always very generous in amount (although with luck of the draw it's positively giant), great quality and quick service. I have never ever had a bad meal in here yet! Ever! And the best is that they have the original Dutch sauces, which tops it all off.
For a quick bite, try the patatje oorlog (chips with satay sauce, chopped onions and then add mayonaise and curryketchup) with a portion of bitterballen. You won't be disappointed. Their chicken satay is also fabulous.
Highly recommended, and good value for money too!

I only had a series of bar snacks there, so I'm not best placed to review the food as a main meal. What I do recall is that the snacks were very nice but portions were small, which I find annoying. The choice of quick appetite fixes included chips with mayo. Atmosphere in De Hems is good, it's a nice lively bar with some decent wines and lots of Flemish beers.
