A fantastic place to eat. Service was polite but a little slow. The food was fantastic and the surroundings (pub and dock) were splendid.
I do not understand the other reviews on here so I have decided to go back on Thursday - I shall write another review afterwards and let you all know how I got on.

Weve been going to the Dickens for ages, usually eating in the pizza restaurant on the first floor or works drink in the bar & never had any thing to complain about. Until now. Sunday night we tried the "Grill on the Dock" restaurant on the top floor. The food was not bad, (& not cheep!) but the staff were terrible. 2 waiters & 1 manager all running round. 25 minutes with menus before being asked for drinks which then took an age to arrive. The manager who did serve us lacked any sence of customer care, only making us feel a little like a pain for daring to to enter his restaurant. After this visit he has nothing to worry about, we would never make this mistake again.

Unbelievable. its certainly overpriced. I reserved a table for two on the balcony, the view was really good, but i cant say the same about the food.
My wife had Oak Smoked Salmon, wich was swimming in olive oil, she couldnt actualy taste the salmon because the oil ruined the whole plate. Mine was the tiger prawns something. It was ok, but for that price i could have bought a Tesco tiger prawn for a fifth of the price and have the same thing.
To ruin the night was the main course. Surf n' Turf (Scotish Sirloin and Tiger Prawns). It was absolutelly disgusting, the steak was tasteless, no seasoning at all. The prawns were probably frozen and then fried, again no seasoning. We had to push the plates to the side, couldn't eat that!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I firstly complained to a waitress, who then said she would report to the manager, the manager never came round our table to see what the problem was or to apologise. When we asked for the bill, surprise surprise, full price. A whopping £80 pounds. Complained again and was given a 20 pounds discount. Went to Macdonalds right after. A no no!!!!!

A party of 8 of us went to the Dickens Inn on 27/01/2007. Drinks were a rip off, £8-00 for a pint and a cider. Food upstairs was expensive, was told that as a special favour they would serve pizza in the upstairs, and promptly pulled out the pizza menus, so this cannot be a once off, they were too prepared for this. While we were looking at the menu, another table got pizza, so lies again. Food was good, staff were pleasant, but with only a manager, and 2 waiters, not enough staff. Wanted to order more drinks, but the staff were too busy to give us enough attention. Paid the bill, and was going to go down stairs to the bar and have one more for the road, so we took our drinks down with us, but when we got to the bar, we were told it was closed, and the bar staff were rude, aggressive and threatening. We will not be going there again, and as I work in the area, I will be spreading the word about an expensive pub, which is understaffed, with rude bar staff. Birthday party ruined.

There was a sign on the stairs reading "Please mind the stairs" when it should really have said "Please mind the really expensive prices, dull food and under enthused staff"

Having just eaten the Grilled chicken ceaser salad, for which the restaurant charges £10.95 I was very disappointed. The lettuce was limp and brown in places, the dressing was watery, the croutons were out of a packet and the small piece of chicken was clearly some cheap frozen cut. The garlic and herb seasonong that was added to the chicken had no effect on the flavour as it was basted on the skin, which was left soft and fatty. The chicken itself had almost no taste.
The service was adequate for lunchtime, but nothing worth a service charge. They reduced the price when I complained but I will not be eating here again.

When I was there with my boat in the Katharine's harbour, last two years, I have enjoyed my good Italian meal en the hughes glass of red wine for a reasonable price. The service was very friendly. Strange that some people had other experiences.
In january the 13th,I will introduce my group of artstudents from the Netherlands to the Dickens Inn. Let's hope they will enjoy it as I did.
