Having gone to The Rose And Crown for the first time last week I must say it will be the last!! It is the worst pub (if you can call it a pub???) I have ever set foot in. I had a busy day at the office and wanted to have a nice pint with my collegue, boy was it so not worth it.

I asked for a pint of London Pride, was told they do not have any Ales!!! No Ales, when this is supposed to be a traditional pub in Highgate???.

So I ordered a pint of Carling and to be honest it was disgusting? ( they obviously have never heard of line cleaning before?) the glass was dirty and warm to say the least.

Having sat down to try and enjoy this pint the member of staff who served me sat two tables away from me was enjoying a cigerette and talking at the top of his voice on his mobile (Maybe he should be cleaning the lines rather than smoking??).

So I moved to another table at the back of the pub so I could breathe but the smoke seemed to carry all around the pub.

After 20 minutes I decided enough was enough. Having not even finished our drinks we left. (Do yourself a favour and drink down the road at the Flask great selection of Ales and the staff are far more interested in making there customers feel welcome!!).

The staff was still enjoying his cigerette as we left and did not even aknowledge us as we left.

A horrible place to go, don't waste your time. Worst pub in Highgate.

We went to the Rose and Crown on Valentines evening and it was ultimately a real disappointment. I booked ages ago but I still got the table next to the door to the toilets. To be fair they let us move, but I noticed another couple looking less than pleased with their table next to the till. Too many tables - not good if you're in a couple. The layout of the lower section is completely wrong. They've gone for an expansive low slung sofa look in the lower section of the bar by the doorway which is pretty extravagant given the way they pack people so close together upstairs. Also, if you're a non-smoker I wouldn't recommend eating at the Rose and Crown. I'm no scientist, but I understand that smoke rises and the Rose and Crown provides incontrovertible evidence of this demonstrable scientific truth. Our table had a sofa just below it where a hideous couple (he looked like Gollam and she looked like Kathy Bates in Misery) were chain smoking. The service was brusquely Central European in its manner and more suited to a rainy Thursday morning in a Truckers caff than a Valentines day romantic meal. The staff also constantly argued with eachother and at times the evening felt like stumbling into an episode of Gordon's Kitchen Nightmares. The sad thing is the food was ok. I had the Pigeon salad with red wine vinaigrette to start and the pigeon and the red wine vinaigrette was great. The course was let down by the straight from packet mixed salad and the stinginess of the portion of pigeon. For my main I had the Fillet of beef with potato and horseradish cake served with a red wine sauce which was very good if a little cold - I blame the bickering staff. Again, slight issue with the portions given the cost. For desert, my girlfriend and I had the White and dark Belgian chocolate fondue which neither of us have had before and are unlikely to have again. We suspect it just went wrong but as we have nothing to compare it to, it's hard to say. However, comparing to something that is good, I would have to say that it was gravely awful. The smoking ban will help the Rose and Crown and service by people who don't look like they would gladly beat you to within an inch of your life will help the Rose and Crown.

I have frequented the Rose and Crown more so since the recent change of management, which, I must say, is a change for the good.

It has been newly decorated, affording it a lovely, welcoming environment, with the usual friendly/efficient service complimenting the experience.

The menu has some welcome changes, whilst maintaining the quality, catering to a wide range of tastes, i.e. Sunday roasts, hearty gourmet burgers, Hungarian goulash etc..

The Rose and Crown stands out from the crowd, (against the chain pubs we are oft subjected to), providing genuine atmosphere, good food and drink!

A guaranteed great night out!

We had a great night out.It was not to busy but this gave the waiter/esses more time to attend to us. They were friendly and informative. The menu was our kind of thing, not to fussy but instead quite simple and definately honest.Yes, Goulash - Very tasty.

A great local find will be back

Nice local pub, with reasonably priced and tasty gastro food. The confit of duck and burger are particular favourites. We also had our wedding reception there, and i'd highly recommend it for parties. We had the whole pub and beer garden. The staff couldn't have been more accomodating. We stayed well into the night without any pressure to leave. And all for £20 per head. They also did us a great deal on the wine. The canapes were excellent (scallops and foie gras) and the buffet was as good as the a la carte food is usually, with interesting options and choices. The puddings were even better. Highly recommend it for an evening drink, a good weekend meal, or most of all a fabulous party.

We used to love going to the Rose & Crown for a quiet, informal Saturday night meal. However, after returning last Saturday for the first time since the new owners took over, I have to say it has changed for the worse. The intimate, romantic evening atmosphere has gone and the place is now much more lively and brighter-lit. Music is quite loud and the place is certainly more like a pub now than a restaurant. The menu is similar to before, certainly in terms of price, but the food wasn't nearly as good. Fine for a few drinks but I won't be going back to eat there.

After reading the review's about the Rose and Crown I felt I had to put the record straight.

I have been drinking and eating at the Rose and Crown for about 3 years now and just wanted to say how great the food really is. Recently taken over buy new owners the Rose and Crown now offers what it was really lacking before, Great food, a relaxed atmosphere and great customer service.

I went there for dinner on Sunday and ordered the Roast Chicken, it was fantastic. The portions are now bigger than what it used to be not your A a la carte rubbish that was on offer before. This meal actually filled me up but there is always room for dessert. I ordered the creame brulee and it was just heaven.

The staff were very friendly and polite and were always checking to see if everything was alright.

The pub has been redecorated and is clear to see the new owners are there to improve the standard of the Rose and Crown. A great place for dinner and to have a quiet drink, highly recomended to anyone who live's or vist's Highgate.
