what the critics say

Metro - 3/5

Thursday, June 27, 2013 - London Particular fritters, made with ham hock and sweet, minted mushy peas; a plated prawn cocktail; and scallops, sold by the piece and grilled on the half-shell with chilli and garlic, are all hard to fault. Likewise, the batter on a fine piece of plaice, which is light, crispy and only as greasy as it needs to be...But a month in, the front of house looks overworked and under managed...If Mumford & Sons were a fish’n’chip shop, they’d probably look like this.

John Walsh - 12/15

Saturday, June 15, 2013 - The cooking (the chef is Lee Bull, formerly at Le Caprice) isn't exactly adventurous but it's very high quality, full of forethought and care. The personnel were chatty, friendly and knowledgable. Even the coffee was terrific, sourced from a special roast café in Old Street. Mr McDonald's choice of a Victorian retro fish'n'chip joint was an eccentric one for a first casting, but he's reeled in an undoubted success.

Cheese and Biscuits

Cheese and Biscuits - 4/10

Friday, June 28, 2013 - Plaice in batter, the one thing as a Fish and Chip Shop you are not allowed to cock up, was a disaster - anaemic, grease-heavy batter stinking of old oil, encasing a fish so overcooked it had lost any bright flakiness it may once have had and was now a mushy, sickening mess. Chips were fine, but were too thin...I have to entertain the idea that perhaps the Fish and Chip Shop had an off night, and that at some other time someone who knows how to operate a fryer may be working in the kitchen. But I can only speak as I find.
