what the critics say

The Independent

John Walsh - 12/15

Saturday, June 05, 2010 - Pan-fried wild halibut was sweet and moist, and the accompanying shredded celeriac danced along with tiny St George mushrooms; the only bum note was a superfluity of lobster foam. (Hasn't foam had its day now? Can we please go back to sauce?) Poached and roasted quail wrapped round melting-away foie gras was a rich choice, lifted by braised red cabbage...Chapter One is my top gastronomic find of the year so far. Hats off to Mr McLeish and his talented team. And when I tell you there's currently a Monday-to-Saturday two-course lunch promotion for 14.50 - what are you waiting for?

Absolutely exceptional restaurant! I went last night (sunday 23rd October) with my family (8 of us in total). We were celebrating my mums partner birthday and decided on chapter one as they live in Locksbottom. What a treat- I have never had such fantastic food- it was truly delicious! We had 3 courses with coffees and chocolates! The chicken and tarragon starter was amazing and the baked hake was superb. The real winner was the assiet of desserts- ABSOLUTE HEAVEN! I recommend this restaurant to anyone who want fantastic food with truly attentive service and a fab atmosphere- no negatives to report at all!

As soon as I can afford I will be back!!

I was completely disappointed with chapter one. I took my girlfriend there for our anniversary and from start to finish the service was terrible.

When we entered the restaurant we were forced to wait several minutes before one of the waiters decided to come and see us.

We were then taken to a wobbly table.

When it came to ordering our food my girlfriend asked for hers well done and the waiter continually told her that it should be rare. We also ordered two glasses of wine and received only one.

When the food arrived my girlfriends food was rare despite the previous argument with the waiter.

Finally when the waiter asked us if we would like dessert and declined, he decided to roll his eyes at us.

For a Michelin star restaurant this was an absolutely appalling experience and I would not re foment this restaurant to anyone else

Andrew McLeish's food may be good (it is, having eaten there three times in the last year) .... but only if you can get a table for more than two hours. We have a family celebration coming up - an eightieth birthday - and tried to book a table at seven pm, for ten people, in six weeks time.

We were told that they 'might' be able to push two tables together to accommodate us, but they couldn't make that decision now, and no matter what we would have to be out by nine pm. Ten people, eating three or four courses (I'm a sucker for cheese!) after pre-dinner champagne ... finished in two hours. McDonalds yes, a Michelin star restaurant, never. Good food is a fine dining experience, not a fast food exercise.

Having eaten in all of Kent's superb Michelin star restaurants (the others are Reads, Apicus, The Sportsman, The West House), I've never experienced such a miserable, unhelpful response.

Last night we had another fabulous evening at Chapter One. We are regulars being lucky enough to live close by this Michelin starred gem of a restaurant. Chapter One never disappoints, their staff are friendly and professional and the food is consistently excellent. A recent addition to the kitchen, a Josper grill, now produces smoky, barbecued rib-eye steaks (served with a sublime truffle mash) that cannot be beaten for flavour and tenderness.

The rest of the menu is regularly refreshed to incorporate seasonal ingredients and is packed with inspired flavours and textures. The dishes look beautiful too. The wine list is reasonably priced with some unusual choices, we started with an Australian Reisling - very nice.

I cannot recommend Chapter One highly enough. This part of south east London/Kent is otherwise a food wasteland so we count ourselves as very fortunate to have this top-notch restaurant on our doorstep.

Really good food. Exceptional at the price.

The wine list is fine but pretty unambitious given the quality of the food.

Service was ok, but certainly not up to the standards you might expect. There are rather too many heavily built men lurking around in suits. They also have a tendency to ask too many questions. On a recent visit I was asked 3 times if I enjoyed my meal, and on each occasion was interrupted to do so.

Minor, and hopefully constructive criticisms. Be in no doubt - this is a very good restaurant and really terrific value.

I feel the need to express what a fantastic time we had, when visiting Chapter One over the weekend. The food and drink exceeded all expectations, but more than anything it was the incredible service, from the young lady on the front desk, to the waiter upon departure that impressed us above all. The team were so accommodating, and since we were celebrating a birthday it was evident to see how far the staff went out of their way to ensure that we had a fantastic and enjoyable night,. As previous reviews state it was very busy however I felt this contributed to a great atmosphere. This well established restaurant definately lived up to its name.

In a nutshell – plain stunning.

The moment they grace the starched tablecloth with the food you become totally oblivious to the fact that the place is hidden in the oustskirts of London. You almost feel sorry destroying the beautiful presentation with your fork and knife, but the temptation is too powerful. I would highly recommend roasted quail with beautifully seared foie gras & a delightful braised red cabbaged – the texture and flavour combination is second to none, a symphony of subtle tones blending together yet fully revealing individual notes. Chocolate dessert is a heavenly delight to every chocoholic, and hugely tempting to others who opted for the lovely looking (and, I'm advised, tasting equally good) lemon tart option.

A truly memorable experience.

four of us went to chapter one on sunday evening to celebrate my patners birthday. Right from the start, we were made to feel most welcome. The food was out of this world. We took ages to pick from the menu, as there is so much choice. The staff were accomodating & most helpful, especially with my partner, who could not decide what dish to choose. The staff explained the dishes & gave us some recommendations. A young waitress appeared with a birthday candle at the end of the meal (How did she know) It was such a lovely touch & rounded off an already wonderful evening. So glad we choose chapter one. The food, staff & whole experience would of been worth double the amount that we were charged. Only wish my partner could cook as good.

My Partner Suprised Me With A Vist To Chapter One On A Sunday Evening And Would Like To Say How Impressed We were. The Food Was Outstanding And Was Service .I Opted For The Raviolo And Pork Whilst My Partner Went For The Eel And Quail And They Were Just Perfect, Although The Portions Look Small They Are Just Right. The Wine List Has A Good Selection Although I Couldn't Take Much Advantage As I Was Driving. The Service Was Friendly And The Staff Were Polite And The Waitresses Were Very Knowledgeable About The Food They Were Serving,Everything Seemed To Come Just At The Right Time. Would Highly Recommend Chapter One And Cant Wait For My Next Visit

we dined at chapter one on sunday evening with a couple of friends, who have never been before. We all had a fantastic evening. The service was friendly & the service was the best we have had in a long time. The staff were always arond if you needed them but never hovered or made us feel at all uncomfortable. All of us had different dishes & enjoyed sampling each others. The desserts were simply heaven, infact, had i not have been so full, i would of loved to start all over again. We would like to congratulate the chef & all of the restaurant team for such a wonderfull experience. I cannot wait for my friends to repay the meal with a restaurant of thier choice ( it will never match chapter one)

A fantastic evening. Thank you. We will return
