Halal Restaurant

I had my 1st curry (Mutton Vindaloo, 1/2 pilau rice & potato & onion bhajee) at the Cullum Street restaurant in 1974.

It was a Monday. By the end of the week I had had 5 similar meals. Hooked for life.

Thank you Martin - you know who you are.

I can concur with all other postings - and agree avidly with Andy Playle's entry - although he obviously missed out on the menu option which became regular towards the end of the month - soya meat vindaloo.

At about 45p a portion it was significantly cheaper than the mutton version.

Alie St continues the great reputation. I must return soon.

One question remains - Why have they stopped the potato & onion bhajee?

It was to die for.

This is an absolute gem of a ruby house, and the description on one of the other reviews - "a Mumbai Greasy Spoon" - is very apt indeed. The staff are good natured and welcoming with handshakes all round as many have mentioned; the quality of the food is excellent; the service attentive but not overbearing; and the decor is dated, but in a way which somehow adds to the character of the old place. The atmosphere can be a little quiet in the evenings, but on the other hand its particualrly lively there at lunch to compensate. The presentation of cut orange segments after the meal with a humorous shout of "half-time" by one of the waiters always raises a smile.

I have been eating at the Halal since 1990 and it tops any other curry restaurant that I have ever been to. The staff are so friendly and when you arrive you are greeted with handshakes all round.

I have yet to find another curry restaurant which can surpass the Halal. The food is amazing,the flavours are sublime, the staff are great and most importantly it's great value for money.

I will be eating at the Halal for many more years to come. Best curry house in the UK.

I have been using this restaurant since 1966, and it has always been consistently excellent.

I no longer live in London so do not get there as often as I would like, but when I do return it's handshakes all round and a great welcome. Excellent!
