I wrote a negative review of this restaurant in July and has since been back and had a superb meal, I also recommended the Square to some Arab friends of mine who had the tasting menu in early August, They are used to good restaurants but thought this was possibly the best meal they had ever had. This time every dish was perfect, the staff very helpful and i can see why the Square is so highly rated by food critics.

I have taken a while to write this review as my husband and I visited on Sunday 28th March. I sort of thought dont bother now as it has been so long but when I think of our experience it still makes me angry. We had flown ffrom the Isle of Man and this is not cheap to spend the weekend enjoying fantastic cuisine. we arrived on time and we both ordered the tasting menu, me the vegetarian one. The restaurant was freezing cold and after I had asked about 4 times to have the heating turned up the waiter wheeled over a plug in heater and set it up next to me. It was no use as the cold air was coming from the celiing... looking around other ladies were shivering also. We eventually got moved to a slightly warmer area. Our courses started to arrive, very fast, one after the other, as though this was some kind of race. We asked for the speed of service to slow down but this offended the staff who seemed very haughty. One of the worse points of the evening was when my husband finished his glass of wine and thus the end of a first bottle and the waiter just took his glass and the empty bottle away, not asking if we wanted any more drinks. We hadnt even had our main course at this point! We asked for the Maitre'D to come over but he didnt, and strutted around with a ridiculous air of arrogance about him.

Eventually the restaurant manager came to see us and explained that diners like to hurry on a Sunday night... to me it seemed more like the staff couldnt wait to get rid of the diners and close up. The Manager eventually gave us some discount off the food. A gesture, yes, but a birthday trip spoilt by the terrible service and pretty mediocre food. I wouldnt waste my money here again and we will stick with Marcus at the Berkeley! Be warned....

We went to The Square with great expectation having read great reviews of this restaurant. Unfortunately it was one of the most disappointing restaurant

experiences I have had. We had the tasting menu and although some dishes were very good, the crab lasagne came with big pieces of crab shell in them (in 3 out of 6 of the dishes) Big enough to be a real danger. This should not happen in a 2 star restaurant . The halibut was overcooked and dry and the lamb was chewy and tasteless. There are much better restaurants in London at this price so do not waste your money going to the square. To top it off they charged for water that we had not had.

My wife and I went to the restaurant for dinner last night. We have been fortunate to eat at many Michelin star rated restaurants around the world and this was right up there at the top. We had the tasting menu with wine. (£155 per person) I would go so far as to say this was my favourite meal I have ever experienced. The food was exceptional in every way I could think of and each wine complemented each course perfectly (9 courses). I would ove to dine here on a regular basis.

My only criticism would be that for an evening meal the lighting wasn't the most intimate and relaxing and the decor was a little unimaginative for our taste. However the staff were excellent and attentive and all seemed to be smiling. Simply an exceptional evening that I'd like to repeat!

We visited the square for a weekday lunch and had the lunch menu. I had the chilled cucumber soup and smoked mackrel sandwiches, the new seasons lamb, with crushed potatoes followed by a chocolate fondant with orange and almond ice cream. Mint tea and petit fours to finish. The quality of the flavours and presentation were excellent.

The service was attentive, but I felt the atmosphere was not as relaxed as I'd hoped. I think perhaps some background music would help with this. Overall I was very impressed and would eat there again.

Essex Eating

Essex Eating

Monday, October 15, 2012 - I'm from Essex; therefore I gravitate towards pie with mash, even in a two star restaurant. It’s the natural order of things. Yes, in this case a very swanky example, Game Pie, Savoy Cabbage and Creamed Potato, with a rich game Jus, poured over ceremoniously at the table. Cracking pastry, beautiful rich meaty filling. A dollop of superbly luxurious, whipped, creamy mash. Quite obviously crammed full of butter and cream, and all the better for it...As you may have gathered from the write up, the food at The Square was pretty much faultless.

An American In London

An American In London - MA

Tuesday, May 25, 2010 - The tasting menu was a non-stop parade of beauty, textures and flavors. And the best part was the leisurely pace of our meal...The Square's tasting menu is 100 pounds per person, so it wasn't a cheap evening. But we had a magical time. For a restaurant that must see its share of anniversary celebrations, the Square managed to make ours feel like the only one that mattered. Our dinner at the Square stands head and shoulders above our relatively-recent meals at the Greenhouse and Hibiscus.

Gourmet Chick

Gourmet Chick - 9/10

Tuesday, October 20, 2009 - We ordered the degustation menu with matched wines at an eye watering 150 each. For this price you get the best service that I have ever experienced at a restaurant...Head chef, Phillip Howard was featured on Masterchef last week where he stressed that, to him, flavour is more important than presentation. Still, there is no denying that this is beautiful food served with style. The degustation menu at The Square is an expensive undertaking but you are left in no doubt as to what the money has been spent on.
