This is the best restaurant in London Chinatown for cantonese food and more but sadly it is now closed permanently. I have asked their staff where is the next best place. The head chef and second chef has moved on to another restaurant called Feng Shui Inn in Gerrard Street, London Chinatown, which is behind Fung Shing. I shall give it a try.

I normally go to Mr Kong down the road, but thought I'd have a change. Chef changes, as I'm sure you all know, are regular in Chinese restaurants so you can ignore the 2007 review about decline in standards. Perhaps it did, but its certainly very good now. I opted for the stuffed squid from their special menu which was fantastic, a great texture dish, a large squid with plenty of bite chewy but not rubbery and stuffed with large pieces of scallop and prawn in a light seafood dish. Really very good. Another special, eel in baskets, was also good, but dominated by too much ginger and I wasn't a fan of the baskets, still, well cooked eel. Other meatier dishes slip from the memory but were all competent but not exceptional. We were pushed for time and probably could have been warned the squid takes a while but other than that the waitress did everything possible to make up for it, and so I found service to be very good, especially by the standards of the area (though I have always had exceptional service at Mr Kong's). The room too, is nice and light, and whilst not going to blow anyone away, is also not going to shame you. The menu is a bit more navigable than many of its contemporaries, and the food is excellent value, and the wine list is suprisingly decent with some value to be found, though the beer is perhaps a bit steep. Overall, good enough to give me a dilemma next time I want a chinese in the centre of town, I'll probably go here for seafood, and to Mr Kong for the meatier type of cantonese cuisine.

I do not know what the fuss is all about. My wife and I have been eating here at least once a month for 25 years and it is still as good as it always was. I am a regular visitor to China and HK so I am not inexperienced in good Chinese food.

The food is genuine and high quality and uses good basics. From the starters we regularly have soft-shelled crab, chicken and jellyfish, garlic prawns or lamb with lettuce. Duck is also good if there are enough of you. Recommended main dishes are eel with coriander, any of the garlic and chili fried dishes, Pe Pa and Ma Po beancurds, roasted belly pork.

The wine list is excellent and not unreasonably priced.

Decor? What do you expect? This is a Chinese restaurant, not an Italian love-nest. Table linen and cutlery are first class, there are flowers on the table, the aircon is good, music is inaudible and the room is bright.

Service? I accept if your are a tourist drinking tap water, you may feel hurried. But that is natural in a busy restaurant and you are unlikley to go again. For most diners and all regulars the service is faultless. Food arives on time, waiters are on call, and managers Jimmy and David are caring and attentive. The answer is become a regular.

I plan to continue going regularly for another 25 years, God willing.
