Tower Tandoori
our review
You might think the Tower Tandoori would be close to Tower Bridge, its windows enjoying a magnificent view of that iconic London landmark. You’d be wrong and so was I and so had to walk the length of Tower Bridge Road to find the place down at the Elephant & Castle end. It’s a restaurant that repays the walk though, nicely modern in style and in an area that’s rapidly taking off with design groups and similar sorts moving in. The lunchtime that we went takeaways were going out the door in industrial quantities.
Started in the same spot in 1978 by the same family that runs it today, the restaurant offers all the trad Indian dishes but also a dish of the day plus a wide range of dishes that are unique as well as dishes that have been given a western slant. The menu is massive like nearly all ‘Indian’ restaurants and you’ll find your favourites there plus plenty more.
We found the food pretty good, subtly spiced with more complexity than most restaurants rise to and generously portioned for the money. The refurbishment of the interior has moved the décor away from the clichéd curry house look, while still keeping the usual visual cues, and the staff are keen to recommend dishes and advise on others. There’s also an al fresco area which given the width of the pavement is actually not too noisy from the passing traffic and should keep the cigarette smokers happy. Well worth a visit.

FABULOUS is the only word that can describe this fantastic restaurant. I went in to celebrate my best friends birthday on a thursday evening, this restaurant has the most exciting ambiance and aura about it. I was served by the manager himself "Emon" who was wondefully calm, kind and curtuous he even decided to bring out a birthday cake a birthday card sparklers with birthday music without any prior warning what so ever. my guests and I were pleased with every single aspect of this restauant and would rate it one of the best indian restaurant in london. Many thanks to all the staff at Tower Tandoori for a truly amazing night.

It appears I have been one of the unlucky ones...
I have lived within a few hundred yards of Tower Tandoori for a a few years now, and have been twice, both times I was thoroughly disappointed.
The first time the food was good, if a little expensive for the quality, but I was charged £7 for a pint of beer
I went last weekend, the beer was much more reasonable, however the Tikka Masala was inedible, we sent the food back, but it arrived exactly the same. When I raised this with the manager he was extremely rude and unhelpful. I'm pretty disappointed as it would be great to have a good curry house so close to where I live!
Overall I will not be going there again; but if you are ensure you know what you are going to be charged and don't order the Tikka Masala!

I have just read a review about this restaurant in which it was given only 2 stars. I cant belive this I have been going to Tower Tandoori for 23 years I go there with friends and family and belive it is one of the best Indian restaurant in London. It is run by Shab and his two sons who have given the restaurant a unique touch and astounding ambience. Truly a pleasurable experience. I dont believe for one minute that the food at Tower Tandoori is bad.

I can't believe the comments I read below are about the same restaurant that I visited for lunch today! I found the service to be insolent and the food to be not at all up to scratch. The only kind thing I can say about the place is that the portions are extremely generous. So as to sample a variety of dishes I had the 'Non Vegetarian Thali' (which cost £15) and I found not one component in it was particularly good. The curries were very bland tasting and all tasting the same as each other, the Tandoori Chicken was dried up, and the 'Thali' contained a poor balance of dishes (i.e. 5 meat dishes and not one vegetable dish) - but worst of all was that the rice was dried up with hard grains to the point of being inedible! This is surely unforgiveable in an Indian restaurant where rice should be one of the mainstays!
- and the waiter did not even apologise when I pointed this out to him, nor was anything taken off the bill, although my rice remained untouched. My bill (including the aforementioned dish and just 1 soft drink - a Sweet Lassi which was poorly made) came to £20 - far too much for this sub-standard lunch which left a bad taste in the mouth in more ways than one

I've been to Tower Tandoori about once a week since I moved to London a couple of months ago (yes, I have put on a bit of weight!)
The Chef's recommendations are all brilliant, especially the Adrakawala Murgh! Go for one of the Biriyani dishes if you are on a budget (starts around £6.50, and its meat, rice plus a separate bowl of vegetable curry sauce!) They also do a daily special dish and bottle of wine. They also do something called the 'Spice Club' which is a reward card system. Buy enough curry and you get the next one free... Very handy if you're a local!
The restaurant decor is very good and the service is attentive. I can't remember the name of the manager there, but he's a star chap, and always very chatty. Also if the weather is good then you can sit on the two big tables they have on the street. The whole of the front of the restaurant can be opened, so you don't feel isolated from the rest of the diners.
Only thing is that the beer is extortionate! £4.50 for a large cobra (you can buy them over the road at Pinky's for £1.69!) Also they say they offer a free beer when you get a takeaway over £25, but this hasn't happened every time I've been there, so best to remind them about it!
Overall its a great place and they support the local hospital with charity nights, so def worth a wisit!

Had an excellent meal here a week or so ago - friendly, charming service; delicious, freshly prepared food; and nice decor to boot. The head waiter was particularly helpful when my girlfriend couldn't decide which main course to go for. Highly recommended.
