I went to Lorelei last night, and it was OK. Its not the place to take someone if you want to impress them, but if you are looking for a quick tasty bite with a low budget, this is the place for you. To say it doesnt have atmosphere is an understatement...this is the kind of place you go to with close friends to create your own magic. Its a ma and pa run outfit, and they are very kind.

I went to Lorelei the other day, and had a great meal as usual. The waitress remembered my friend H and I (even though we haven’t been there for months) and even enquired as to how my boyfriend’s parents are (as I took them there last year). This is what makes Lorelei a welcome retreat from the soulless razzamataz of pizza chains. Lorelei is calm, consistent, determinedly unflashy and a little bit secret.

Yes, Lorelei is the kind of experience people love or hate and I admit the experience is a little bit weird. But I adore it, and it hasn’t changed in the years I’ve been eating there. If you want a little more description, see the post I wrote back in 2005 on this thread…

The food's quick, yummy and decently priced and the friendly service always comes with a smile. You can bring your own wine too, which is a fantastic added bonus. I'd always go here for a pre-drick bite if I'm in the area, it's so much more tempting than the big chains I could frequent anywhere and anywhen. This quaint little place has bags of character. I'm just gutted I didn't discover it sooner.

Despite every lunch spot for a million miles being full to bursting point, we were the only diners. The old guy put down his newspaper just long enough for him to cook us a lovely pizza, while his missus provided the drinks. It was a great spot to have a quiet natter over a home cooked, topping packed pizza. I loved the mural and the seen better days Formica tables. It reminded me of Pollos before they shut it down.

This unique restaurant makes an excellent change from the plastic world of Ask and Pizza Hut. The people running the place have been there ages and virrtually part of the soho establishment adding a certain novelty value to the experience.

The pizzas are the best I have eaten and reasonably priced; when you consider that you can bring your own drink the potential is there for a fantastic, bargain evening

I can't disagree more strongly with 'Nik'. In a world dominated by chains, Lorelei is a beautiful oasis. The pizzas are small but perfectly formed - the Diavola is particularly good - and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. If you can't appreciate this place then I'm afraid you have no soul and deserve to spend eternity sitting alone in the corner of Pizza Hut with a Meat Feast and a fading party hat. Long live Lorelei.

I would have to say that this is one of the nicest place that i have ever been to. Yeah it does border on plain and not as modernised as most places with loud music but it does have to old rustic charm to it. Yeah the pizza aint 25 inches big but who would want one so big thats the size of a UFO! (ITS NOT PIZZA HUT!) its an average plate size which is enough to fill any appetite. It has to be said that although the decor is out of date it has to be doing something right to have been open for about 30 years with the original chef!! Now how many places do you know that have been open for this long with the original cast members!

The average pizza is priced about £5-£6 and the quality is all home made! you can even see the flour as you enter the restaurant where it has been placed for the past 30 years and never moved! The menu itself has expanded over the years from traditional spag bol to carbonara etc... but has not lost its quality or taste. I have been coming here for many years and i would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a great cheap eats who wants to eat it Italian Style!

I think Nik's kind of missed the point. The aspects he didn't like about the atmosphere are the same aspects its regulars love. Nik, please go to Pizzaexpress with your noisy friends and leave us to enjoy Lorelei in peace. By the way, the food is quite obviously homecooked.

Lorelei is a small, dingy cafe closely resembling a greasy spoon.

The atmosphere was non-existent - it was far quiter than any library I've ever visited - and the decor was very near the end of its servicable life.

Once ordered, our pizzas took an inexplicably long time to arrive, considering there were only two other diners besides my friend and I, and when they finally did we were rather dissapointed to discover that they were:

a) half the size of any other pizza we've seen in a restaurant

b) the worst pizzas we had ever eaten

Imagine, if you will, a very cheap frozen pizza from a very cheap supermarket cooked in a professional catering oven and you've probably got a fairly good idea of what we were presented with.

The bill came to £13.40 for two pizzas, an OJ and a mineral water, which is only marginally less than one would pay at one of the many superior competitors in this area.

I strongly recommend that you avoid this restaurant. Consider Strada, Fire & Stone, Gourmet Pizza Co and Il Pomodorino which are all within ten minutes' walk.
