New Loon Fung

The worst restaurant i have ever been to. All 5 dishes were stone cold, the staff were unfriendly and rude. We thought it was over-priced. Spoiled a very nice evening. There were very nice looking places off the main chinatown drag that we wished we'd tried instead. DO NOT EAT IN THIS RESTAURANT.. YOU WILL REGRET IT IF YOU DO!

Shocking.

After being greeted by a random chap standing outside the seemingly grand entrance (with chandelier and all!) we sat down at around 20:30, hungry and excited to have found somewhere to eat. We were a party of 4 and only wanted to order from the set menu.

We sat for too long waiting from someone to come over and ask if we wanted drinks – we had to actively look around to try and get someones attention. And it went downhill from there…

We ordered a side of dim sum along with our set menu (which was a duck starter, and mixed hors d’oeuvres starter followed by the mains/sides (£18 per person for the set menu + the dim sum which was around £10 if I’m being generous in my recollection)

20:50 the dim sum arrived in good time with the hors d’oeuvres and were ok – we were having a nice time. They clear the plates and again it is a battle to get their attention for some more drinks (not once did they ask how the food was, or if we needed anything)

21:10 we are STILL waiting for the duck to arrive. We chase and are told it will be 5 minutes.

21:20 – the duck finally arrives. At this time, we stupidly did not think to ask that they rush the kitchen for our next order.

21:30 – we ask where our food is. We are told it will be 5 minutes and I must add they were not polite, or apologetic or anything you would expect from such shoddy delays with our food.

21:40 we ask again and are told the same ‘five minutes’ – we are starting to get very angry (and hungry!) and during this time the table next to ours has been waiting to pay their bill for about 15 minutes.

21:50 we have to cancel our food – a waitress tries to tell us we cannot do this because the kitchen has started cooking but unless they went out to prepare the animals from living I have no idea what was taking them so long (the restaurant was only half full)

So…all in all we had 7x beers, 1x bottle of wine, 1x ½ duck & 1x dim sum and paid a shocking £101!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely furious and totally ruined my night out with my family!

DO NOT EVER GO THERE!!!!!!!!!!

i know this restaurant now for about 20 years. it has changed the landlord for a couple of times unfortunately, and i have to confess that the complete situation in chinatown london has changed . the new loon fung restaurant has suffered a bit because of that, but still today it is one of the best restaurants in gerrard street, london. i was there for the last time in december 2011 and the service was very good, the food was very good in comparison with chinese food in germany the netherlands, france and other restaurants in london. it looks like any chinese restaurant in beijing and this is most probably the fact why it is not quite on the level of our european attitudes. but i still like it, i still enjoy the food and the service. it is just nothing else but a typical chinese restaurant in europe outside of beijing but excellent chinese food, polite service and a certain factor of feeling well, and the complete staff is going to help you with it. i have enjoyed it as ever and i recommend it. ask the landlord and he will help you, this is for sure.

try the cheung fun with prawn, or the hot pot, take some of the dim sum menue, or enjoy the 1/4 of a duck with pancakes! all these delicacies are great. i hope "0" is the best ranking and "10" the worst.

We went for a pretheatre dinner, mistook this restaurant for another one. The decor looks very tired. We got a table by the windows but next to the stairs to the toilets and coat hanger/drinks storage space. We ordered a dim sum platter for 2 and barbecue pork with rice and a black been beef with noodle. Both main dishes came with hardly any meat,very greasy and with no taste. Service was slow despite ( and unfriendly) the restaurant being quiet empty at 6.30PM. With 3 small tiger beers the bill came to £39. We will not return and I think you can get decent food anywhere else for that price.

Service was rushed and terrible, supposedly open to 11.30 pm but when we arrived before 11 pm we were informed that we needed to order quickly because the kitchen was closing at 11.10. The crispy egg rolls, no meat they had run out, were good. Order the main course to find out later that they were at of all crab dishes. The mains that finally arrived were not good, they served one of us the wrong dish, but too late to change, kitchen closed sorry. The other dish was just bland and oily, surprizing for a dish with ginger. At least half of the pork in the incorrect dish was inedible fat. As they rushed the horrible meal along with turning off the lights (at least it did not feel like a police interrogative anymore) and music, not a good meal. Then a request to add a tip before turning off the lights on the stairs as soon as we got one foot out of the door. Not recommended.

We visited this named "restaurant" few weeks ago and have found it is a rubbish!!

At first : We did choose it because of Chinese people who was there - and we hoped it mean good quality of food,but honestly - the food was the same like take away nothing special and easy made

2. the more worse we got with the bill - they did bring the whole amount on receipt

without any explanations how it have been counted .When I asked were is the proper bill - they gave me a 5 - 7 different pieсes on papers with some pensil writings above and said that this is the receipt !!

3. there were 7 of us and my hus birthday and his paid it - but I did turn to them asking why is so much? When we did calculate again - I found there were more of 60 pounds plus for nothing!!!Them answer was " there was 12.5 % charge for serving table ..."you should see this small letters at bottom of menu.!! But if it even this amount to take off - was still on 40 pounds more of real summ .. They gave me 35 pounds back - just saying they been counted wrong - twice our drinks!!!

It is could make you angry - just becouse we did not drink much- only for 28 pounds!!Finally I took piece of paper and made calculate to them by myself and one of friend did help me!!Yes,they gave back our money - but any apologise was not given!!!

P.S. We have still left 5% for waitress - but now I am not sure who is made this "mistake" or did it happens by " mistake"!!

The most awful service I have ever been given or I should say not given!

Had my brothers 30th birthday there, food was served cold and 3 hours waiting for a starter, we did not even get to eat the main meal as they served all the rice first (cold) then we waited for half an hour for the meat and when we enquired about it they said 'oh we have run out' outrageous left very hungry and very emotional as I my brother had all his family and friends there!

The shop is amazing and the food is absoulutely delicious. The waiters are lovely and mosty of all very generous. Best restaurant in china town i think !!!!!!!
