Waitress was rushed, rude, and unsympathetic. She did not know or care about vegan food options. After ordering difficulties the food was OK - perhaps too much salt? Menu was overpriced.

Nice food. Unexpensive restaurant. We booked the table for 8pm and left at 9.30pm. Negative comment: no athmosphere. However when we left the DJ started to play some music... I am sure it kicks off after. So don't book too early! The service is great and the people are very nice.

The waitress was amazing. So firendly and helpful. Good to have someone who nows what she is talking about. Food average. Loved the music.

I have been to the Gate a couple of times and have been very impressed by the food. Some interesting combinations and as a meat-eater I was happy to return. We did have an issue when we went on a warm Saturday evening. The service was very slow, with no order being taken for 30 minutes because they said the kitchen was busy (told us this after 20 minutes). I don't generally have an issue with slow service if there is a good reason, but we felt that the staff could have been a bit more apologetic and helpful. Generally this is a great spot though, so hopefully this won't happy again.

Gate restaurant was everything we needed for a brilliant night out. We enjoyed delicious home made breads before picking a couple of dishes off the modern tapas menu - I cannot recommend highly enough the fantastic garlic king prawns, the best I've had in London in a long time...!!! Fresh bread and the garlic butter ... just yummy. We had the best cocktails made by the rather attractive bar staff, something highly potent with pummelled apples which became very difficult to stop drinking!
I also love the fact that as the restaurant quietens the drinking and dancing starts as the late licence brings in the Notting Hill crowd - great night! Brilliant Value!

Don't be put off by the elusive entrance, The Gate
restaurant that you find at the bottom of the stairs
is teeming with ambiance, warmth, and friendly faces.
A very popular local nightclub with an excellent
eclectic repertoire of DJ's by night, The Gate makes
an elegant and modern restaurant by day and evening.
The most impressive element that you first notice on
the menu is the frequency of the word "homemade".
Point this out to your waiter and you will find that
in fact everything on the menu is homemade.
Everything. Even the bread. And the burger buns. And
this is no botched home-attempt at something floury.
It is warm, variously seeded, and very tasty. The menu
doesn't offer your standard 'Starter', 'Mains' and
'Dessert'. Instead there is a mouth-watering array of
£6/£7 dishes among which I would highly recommend the
plump, fresh and artfully marinated king prawns. The
tender, authentic and deliciously aromatic lamb tagine
with it's little fruity surprises, and the crisp and
creamy goat strudel with celeriac remoulade. A dish
particularly close to my heart. Real feel-good winter
food. Not to mention the excellent and novel mini
burgers and the Gate's own salt beef potato cake. Each
dish is a substantial serving, perfect for one mildly
hungry diner, but the best way to enjoy is to fight
over them with a group of hungry friends. Good food,
honestly priced (or is that Waitrose? Tough, the Gate
deserves it more!). But this is no boisterous eatery,
oh no, you would be more than happy to take your mum
there. The food and service is that good. The staff
were ever-attentive and clearly proud of the food they
served. The clincher (for me anyway) was the timely
removal of our empty plates and wiping away of all our
detritus. There's nothing worse than staring at your
empty plates when you are sated and maybe a little too
full...
You then have a choice, sit back digest and enjoy your
wine for a few more hours and then either hot-foot it
out of there before you find yourself amidst Notting
Hill's party people, or, and what I would recommend,
is stick around. I defy anyone to sit completely still
whilst the DJ plays some groovy tunes (and I'm pretty
fussy!). And all on a tuesday. A fantastic little gem
set in the underbelly of Notting Hill.
