For a Sichuan restaurant, Gung Ho was sadly lacking in providing a Sichuan menu. There were only 2 starters which were Sichuan in style, and we ordered both of it - the bang bang chicken was horrible; we've had better hot and sour soup in Chinese takeaways.
Being Chinese, I hesitate to give a Chinese restaurant a bad name, but in this case, the dining experience has left me so disgruntled, it would be unfair for me to lie about just how bad the chef's cooking is (case in point, there was not a single Chinese patron in the entire restaurant, other than myself and my boyfriend.. ).
The menu consists mainly of imitation Cantonese cuisine - which would have been fine if the restaurant could serve up something decent. We ordered 2 main courses from the Chef's Speciality, all of which turned out disappointing. The fish with chinese wine was so unfresh, the fishy taste overpowered the batter and even generous dosing of sugar and rice wine could not disguise its stench. We had half a mind to send it back, but didn't wish to wait any longer for our courses (that, and we were afraid the waiters would spit in our food if we dared complain!). The coffee beef was bland and very tough, but it was at least palatable, compared to the fish.
In the end, even though we hadn't ordered very much, we couldn't bring ourselves to finish our meal. We got the bill and left, a dining experience ruined due to an inadequate menu and terrible cooking.
Prices at the restaurant seem reasonable - but wait till you see the tiny portions! Cleverly though, the restaurant has taken to serving all the food in minature plates - even so, it does not disguise the poor portions served.
Royal China has respectable portions, and the food is excellent - if you want authentic Cantonese food, there are loads of other restaurants available in London, most of which will be far better than Gung Ho.
We left, without finishing our dinner - and popped into GBK just down the road for some comfort food. It was the least we could do, after such a terrible meal.

We went to this place for the first time last week and were really impressed. It looks nothing particularly special from the outside (we have walked past numerous times without endeavouring inside) but once in, the menu is varied, well priced and the service is exemplary. My crab and sweetcorn soup was delicious, and the main (sizzling king prawns and scallops) was even better. My other half fared just as well with his soup starter, but crispy shredded beef left us wondering where amongst the crispy-ness was the actual beef. That aside, we would definitely go back and would recommend without hesitation.

Don't even think about it! I ordered a selection of dishes, spare ribs(passable), dim sum (overly doughy and drenched in soy sauce), special fried rice (no taste whatsoever - how did they manage to get this wrong??) and Kung Po chilli chicken - a usually lovely dish I have had many times in a number of Chinese restaurants (consisted of boiled pieces of chicken in a watery chilli sauce)! The one saving grace was the steamed vegetables. If you are looking for delicious Chinese food then this isn't the place to look.

Everytime igo to the restaurant i am greeted with smiling faces. The restaurant is an extremely pleasant place to eat and the food is out of this world. Personal favorites include the shredded chicken for starter and the sizzling beef as a main dish. For the standard of food you get price is very reasonable. Reccomend to anyone looking for a good chinese

Having read the previous reviews, I was really looking forward to eating at Gung-Ho.
It was a wednesday night and surprisingly busy! There were 7 of us, and our table was in the back corner of the restaurant. I do have to say I was sorely disappointed with the service. We waited about 10 minutes before the waiter came over to ask us for drinks. Only half our party had arrived, and once they arrived, they must have waited another 15minutes to order drinks. Actually in the end we got fed up with waiting for then to come to us, one of my friends had to get up and call the waiter. (this happened on a number of occassions during the evening)!
Once the food was ordered I do have to say the service was very fast! In fact a bit too fast. We had just finished first course and they were ready to serve the second. We had to ask them to leave about 10 minutes before the next course.
All in all, Food is Good, but not excellent. Service was very bad.
Would I go back again? probably as like I said food was good and good value for money (£27 per head, with 3 courses and wine and beer). But next time would probably not go back with such high expectations!

Beautifully cooked food with a fresh taste. Backed up by a warm friendly welcome. So much better than your average Chinese restaurant.

Went here on a saturday night and found that it was a decent chinese restaurant if not a great one. The service was good if not amazing and the food was fine if not anything special.
The portions here compared to what you can get in places like Chinatown are quite small and there was mainly spring onion and little Lamb in one of the main course dishes, the Sizzling Lamb with Spring Onions which also had a lemon flavour, which added little to the dish.
A good place to go if you don't mind spending a little over the odds for nice surroundings but if you are going mainly for food, you may be a bit disappointed by the average nature of the food. If you want a very good chinese food in West Hampstead, The Good Earth Express down the road is the place to go, but unfortunately this is just a take-away at present.

Gung-Ho is without doubt the best Szechuan restaurant in London- everything is fantastic.Me and my family have been going there for over 10 years and whenever we have a celebration or family gathering we always go to Gung-Ho where the Manager David greets us like old family friends. The food is so delicious that myself and my brother often order takeaway when we are missing the food there! The Bang-Bang Chicken is superb, the tasty spring rolls are always fresh and crisp and the crispy chilli beef is out of this world. The service is fantastic, the food is amazing and you get excellent value for money.I cannot understand why Gung-Ho is not more widely known.I'd be happy to eat there every night of the week.
