our review

After a five year closure, Korean restaurant Busan has reopened on Holloway Road. Locals can look forward to a new sushi menu and traditional Korean dishes like pajeon, japchae (sweet potato noodles), and samgyopsal (chargrilled pork belly.

TimeOut

Charmaine Mok - 3/5

Monday, December 19, 2011 - We loved the description of the sundubu jijae (soft curdled tofu stew), the experience likened to 'eating a spicy cloud'. Indeed - the soft tofu curds were gloriously silky and light, suspended in a rich chilli- and seafood-spiked soup, mellowed by the addition of a sunny egg yolk. Good, but not better, was a galbi tang (beef shortrib stew), a peppery, milky broth laced with slippery glass noodles, chunks of tender daikon radish and pieces of (not quite as tender) beef...Service demonstrated a solid sense of hospitality - commendable, as it seemed it was Mrs Lee who was singlehandedly working the room on our visit. Welcome back, Busan.

Apparently this place has just reopened. Didn't go to it before but popped in on Friday night with friends after seeing something about it somewhere. As it's local I wanted to give it a go & it's a great addition to holloway road offerings.

We had starters & main as the desserts didn't look very exciting. Starters of aubergine in sesame, dumplings, edamame & kimchi were really delicious. aubergine & the dumplings were the tastiest. the kimchi was good but I'd have liked a lot more. It was deliciously hot though. Main courses were bimimbap, seafood pancakes, chilli chicken & beef bulgogi were all great.

Service was friendly if a bit erratic at times but quite charming. Air con on in January made it a bit cold. Overall really enjoyable meal, some faults & bit of a lack of atmosphere as it was only a third full - on a friday night; but the food was excellent & fairly good value. We ate a lot & it turned out at £20 a head. Will definitely be back as all the food was good & it's got a lot of interesting dishes on a fairly extensive menu.
