Thai Corner Cafe

The last review I gave for a Dulwich restaurant was one of shameful inadequacy ..
I am kinda loathed to write one for this little place too, but for purely selfish reasons - it is sooo good I don’t want to have trouble getting a place ..
The food is fresh and yummy and always beautifully prepared and presented and the staff lovely .. The way every small family run restaurant should be .. Perfect ..
You can bring your own bottle, which is nice ..
The toilets used to be outside via the kitchen but that was long ago ..

Yes I definately went to the Corner Cafe in Dulwich. When we found this restaurant on this website over Christmas we were delighted, since moving to Herne Hill a year ago we have been looking for a cheap and cheerful local place and we love Thai food - being BYO also appealed. We walked in and thought we had found what we were looking for, staff were all smiles, restaurant full of people tucking into good portions of food and great smells wafting from the kitchen. But such a dissapointment. We ordered duck in tamarind sauce, which was fine but the pad thai and the chicken with chilli and basil were more reminiscent of a british chip shop than exotic Thai beaches. Everything was overly greasy, lacking in chilli or any other flavour except vegetable oil and overcooked. Yes it all came in at under twenty quid but then so does a bag of chips and at least then you can add salt and vinegar. We thought we'd found a local jewel but it turned out to be no more than a cubic zirconia cracker charm!

well, i'm here to talk about the thai corner cafe in east dulwich. i have attempted to dine in there before for years but it 's always been fully booked. luckily we got a table by chance last week without booking. tables and chairs are crammed in to the max in there and if you just ignore the whinging table next to you you're sorted. i ordered the red duck curry which i can still remember now, soooo tasty and moorish, the boyf had massive grilled prawns which looked and tasted pretty special. rice wasn't too generous but it did us ok. all for £20 including tasty chicken satay stick starter. it's a bring your own bottle (hooray!) and you don't have to walk past the kitchen to go to the toilet... but you do have to go upstairs which is a bit like going up in to the upstairs flat. well worth the wait after all this time and will definately be going back.

there are two restaurants called the Thai Corner Cafe in London. One in Islington and one in South West London. For those people debating about whether the restaurant has a license and/or whether you need to walk past the kitchen to get to the loo - YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT DIFFERENT RESTAURANTS!
Also, for the person who were told they hadn't made a booking - most likely you hadn't, you'd booked at the other place!

I live locally, I go there a lot. Debate over, you can pay with cards now and you do have to walk downstairs and then through the kitchen (technically you might call it 'past' the kitchen) to get to the toilet.
The food is awesome and its cheap as chips (these days probably cheaper)

It is rubbish that you have to walk through the kitchen to get to the toilet in this restaurant, and they do NOT have a licence. It is BYO bottle of vino.
I live in the same road as this restaurant and am a regular. The prices are more than reasonable, and there's no poncey atmosphere. The service is polite and discreet. The thai curries could do with being a bit more authentic. They are fine - but a bit 'anglacised' unfortunately. I always have to ask for it to be 'spicy' when Thai curries should be spicy, period.
Having said that, I think it's outrageous that other Thia restaurants charge ridiculous OTT prices like £10+ for a main course. The Thai corner Cafe is about £5.50 for a main.

We've been coming to this lovely neighbourhead restuarant for a few years and the food and service is always fantastic (I really recommend the chef's special 'fried fish in 3 sauces).
In answer the previous comment I think you might have been at a different restaurant (!) as they definately do have a lisense and you definatley do have to walk through the kitchen to get to the toilet, and you can pay by card!

I was there last night and can confirm that they don't have a licence and you don't enter through the kitchen. Michelle must have been talking about somewhere else.
That said, this is a great restaurant. Friendly, relaxed, great food and very reasonable prices. Bring cash, as said before.

I've been going to this lovely restaurant for years. I think it has actually got better in the last year or so with a much improved menu. The food is freshly prepared and absolutely delicious. Portions are also generous, especially the starters. The service is very good - attentive but unobtrusive. They now have a licence which is convenient if your visit is unplanned. Oddly, you have to pass through the kitchen on your way to the toilet - it's reassuring to see a clean kitchen!
