Tong Ka-Nom Thai

Recommended by a friend who raved about it. We often go there with Thai friends (so food must be good) and take our own drink - at least you know the bill is only for the food and not overpriced booze!
The food is delicious and very reasonably priced. A friendly cafe type restaurant which we now recommend to others. Well worth the trip to Willesden!

The overall presentation of the food and was good but it lacked the "authenticity" I was seeking. Straw mushrooms were not used in the tom yum soup and it lacked sourness and tasted too sweet. The chicken green curry included peas and carrots which I was not accustomed to. Rest of the dishes were average. Service was good but prices not that cheap and dessert of mango and sticky rice was the highlight of our meal.

I love this place. It's cheap and the food is fantastic. My partner and I were meeting some friends here once at 8 o'clock. I made her get there an hour early so I could have an extra course! It's bring your own booze (there's an okay off-license 50 yards away) which makes it even better value for money. All the starters are great. The Laab (salad with meat) is delicious. Their mains are pretty spicy so be prepared.
Book ahead and get a table upstairs. The only downside is that downstairs is pretty pokey and a bit too close to the toilets.

I live in Harlesden and discovered this place last week, when driving down Harrow road to find somewhere new to eat.
Excellent value, reasonably authentic dishes (we had been to Busaba Eathai the weekend before!!!) and although they cant serve alcohol, their is an offlicense next door selling Wine, Cobera, etc next door!
Worth a visit if you live anywhere near!!! Looked busy on Friday so perhaps call ahead to book at weekends!!!

I absolutely love this place - and although I can see what the last reviewer was saying about downstairs - for the great food and value for money it can't be beat. I go to Tong Ka-Nom quite regularly and find it to always be full, with a nice neighbourly atmosphere. The fact that you can bring your own booze is fab too!

Don't ever get a seat downstairs in non smoking!
Myself and my wife made this error after reading great reviews and ended up deeply disappointed. Wanting to avoid smoke we were seated downstairs(or a basement as some might say!) at 7.30pm on a Sat night, no-one else sat down there and now we know why. Only 4 tables, bare walls, no heating except for a £10 heater so my wife had to wear a shawl and the toilet which we could smell the disinfectant!! One toilet was also broken.
Food was okay for a Thai. Hot and Sour Prawn soup was a bit too hot, papaya salad was actually spicy and my fish was too oily and over fried. Once we got our food we were left to it as there is no waiter service downstairs so we had to go upstairs to order extra drinks/food.
Upstairs looked far better so I'm sure our review would of been higher but we wont be going back as we travelled from Harrow :-(
This restaurant is also between Kensal Green/Willesden Junction rather than Notting Hill/Kensington.

No offence Kathy, but I think you may have left your taste buds at home that night...I'm almost tempted to agree with you, though, because I am afraid that if word gets out about how good this restaurant really is then we won't get in.
I have tried other Thai restaurants, some cheap and cheerful, some bizzarely overpriced, and can say with absolute conviction that this restaurant is almost embarrasingly superior in terms of food, service, atmosphere, value for money - the lot.
Give it a go - just make sure to keep it a secret.

The previous reviewer completely misses the point. This is a small, neighbourhood cafe serving delicious but cheap Thai food. I regularly make the trip from Central London simply because it is worth the trek. If you want to stay in the "safety" of Zone 1, and pay over the odds for inauthentic and tarted-up Westernised approximations of Thai food that's your loss. Oh, and by the way, I've always found the service friendly and gentle. Finally I should confess that I'm not the owner, or even a relative. Just a very satisfied customer.

We have been going to Tong Ka-Nom for eight years and it has never been anything less than brilliant. The food is great and easily the best Thai food in London and the staff are always very friendly. So many times in London you leave a restaurant feeling let down either by the food or service or both, so get yourselves up the Harrow Road and enjoy a consistantly good restaurant
