La Smorfia

Having not given it a good review previously, I thoguht I'd see if it could redeem itself on a recent visit (also, as I could not face eating a chain pizza).
The pizza was thin and had good dough, but the toppings were extremely stingy.
For such a small restaurant, the attention to detail was poor: took a while to be served, and the complementary micro bruschetta came just after- not before- my pizza.
The tiramisu was one of the worst things I have chanced to eat: dry, bland. Tasted as if it had been made a year ago ( the waiter said it had been made that day, in a way that convinced me even he didnt believe that).
Two strikes, out. Shame, as I like tosupport my local gaffes.

I honestly find it annoying that in London you cant find enough english speaking people, La Smorfia's waiters are all Italian none of them speak a word of english, I never thought i would say this but I love it, this adds to the whole experience, its like a little lost Italy in West Hampstead. The food is very good as is the sign language service. The atmosphere is very welcoming and you never feel rushed to finish your food, i have spent 3 hours eating there before and thats how it should be. One of my favorites!

After many years roaming around London in order to savour Italian and Continental cuisine, I and my partner have come to the conclusion that la Smorfia is simply one of the best Italian restaurant in London, in terms of value for money and quality of food. The unpretentious look of the restaurant from the outside should not put people off. The owner and the staff welcome you in a family atmosphere. If you are looking for a dancing on the table and loud music, disco restaurant, obviously you are not in the right place. On the other hand, If you are after a good quality restaurant, that serves a strictly Italian menu then, you are in the right place.
To see the chef going around to help and chat with the clientele is also quite nice and reassuring.
The downside is that the restaurant is quite small. it fills quite quickly in winter. In summer the terrace on West End lane doubles the number of available sits.
Highlights: Antipasti La Smorfia, seafood Pasta and Neapolitan recipes (look out for specials).
Coffee can be a bit of a disappointment if you are used to the best Illy.

Whilst I can't fault the food, regrettably I had to resolve to boycott it in future after once being given an anorexic-on -a-diet portion of lobster pasta (at prices that were definitely NOT NW6!). Shame, but alas, when I go to a restaurant I don't expect to leave hungry and/or shortchanged..
