Mezzanine

At first glance, Mezzanine seemed as if it would be overpriced and under-impressive, thanks to its location within the National Theatre. Last weekend, 5 of us were pleased to find that this was not the case.
Pleasant staff quickly found us a table in a restaurant that was still-bustling before the final call before the evening performance, and we all ordered main courses, forgoing the starters which were expensive in comparison to the reasonably-priced main courses. I really enjoyed my pork belly served with colcannon and prunes, which was tender without being fatty. The vegetarian option of polenta with gorgonzola was reported as being very good indeed.
The restaurant emptied as performances began, leaving the surroundings unusually quiet for a Central London restaurant. If that factor doesn't prove to be a deterrent, it's worth eating at Mezzanine. I expect I'll return in the future if I'm in the area.

They run a slick operation - getting you through a 3 course meal in less than an hour, without actually feeling like you have to hurry. The staff are very competent and friendly, and the restaurant has a nice smart but relaxed feel to it.
The food is yummy too - but nothing really amazing. Just good quality standard things like steak, and ravioli. But with a good selection of fish/seafood on the menu too. I had the crab gazpacho to start which was subtle and yummy. Then the spinach and ricotta ravioli which was average. My fellow diners all loved their food (including the steak, chicken, and trout), and the wine list was good too.
I would not hesitate to go here again before a play at the National. But no need to go out of you way for it.

I dashed in here at 6:46pm before watching a play in the theatre and asked if they were still serving the pre-theatre menu (last orders are at 6:45pm). The main dude smiled and showed me to a table.
The set menu is fairly varied. I started with the tiger prawn salad which was sensational. The butter-stuffed cod loin was disappointing - not much more than a pub fish & chips. Some of the other dishes looked more interesting and I wish I'd had one of those.
A good choice for pre-theatre dining and at an excellent price (2 courses for under £20) with very good service, but not particularly exciting.
