To be fair the Mogul have emailed me with an unconditional apology, and have offered a complimentary meal.

My friends went to The Mogul last night at about 8:15-8:30pm. It was a group of 5 of us and we were seated downstairs.
The waiter who tended to us was surly and alarmingly rude. We were made to wait a long time for the waiter to take our initial drinks order, so after we requested his attention, we asked politely that he take our main meal order as well, which he refused to do. The drinks then arrived but he had forgotten our water, and diet coke. Poppadoms were brought which we readily ate as we were very hungry. We then waited for an HOUR for our main meals to arrive. There was no apology, no status update, nothing from our waiter as we got steadily more hot in the stuffy basement. The food finally arrived at close to 10PM, which considering we arrived at 8:30pm at the latest, was only a group of 5, and had only had poppadoms, is FAR too long to wait.
The waiter barked orders at us like "pass the plates" with not so much as a "please" or "thank you" the ENTIRE time we were there. We were extremely courteous to him, though it was obvious our efforts were futile from the beginning. His attitude stank, and upset two of my female companions, as they couldn't understand what we had done to deserve such vitriol.
The waiter also managed to forget one of the side dishes that we ordered, and I made sure to point out it hadn't arrived so that we weren't charged.
When it came to paying for the meal (which again took a while, since we couldn't get the waiter's attention) we saw the optional gratuity of 10% that was added to our bill, and chose not to pay it in full for the reasons detailed above. We instead paid for our food and told the waiter we would leave a tip in cash since he asked us why we weren't paying the billed amount, although, to be honest, the waiter deserved nothing of what we left.
As we were leaving we were then accosted by the manager(?) asking why we had not paid the optional gratuity, which we then explained again. I can't tell you how cross we were being asked again and again about an OPTIONAL gratuity amount which The Mogul did absolutely nothing to deserve. The only positive is that my friends thought the food was good, although I thought it was bland.
I will certainly not be going back, as this is one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had in a long time. I've given them my feedback which hopefully they will use constructively. I would recommend you go for value and great service for your money at the Millennium Balti House instead.

I've been going to the Mogul for five years of so as we live closeby and had a good time again when we visited last night.
The food seems fairly consistent to me in terms of quality and variety, with north Indian friends rating it quite highly when they have been there. The veggie stuff has always seemed better than other places.
Downstairs definitely beats the street-level eating area and I alway ask for a table in the basement.
The one problem with the palce was the god-awful service which became a bit of a in-joke during our visits. However, they must have run some customer surveys because as of a few months ago the people are incredibly nice.
Not the cheapest restaurant but a long way from the most expensive in Greenwich I would recommend this to friends.

Went to the Mogul last night, and was very disappointed. The atmosphere and service were fine, but the food was very low quality, except for the starters, which were ok. The food, for the most part, seemed to have been slopped out of a giant cauldron, with every dish being more or less the same - the only difference being whether it was lamb or chicken. MY husband and I ordered two different dishes - his was lamb, mine chicken, and I swear that was the only difference. They were described as two completely different dishes, with different flavours, yet they tasted the same to me. There seemed no care put into the preparation and presentation of food - it was merely slopped into dishes and stuck on the table. I think part of the problem must be that this restaurant is in the centre of Greenwich - a real touristy place. The place had a real 'get lots of money quick from tourists' feel to it. And it was expensive. VEry disappointed.

I have been to Mogul many times and although the food is really good and the atmosphere downstairs warm, the service is really poor. Some waiters are indeed very moody and rude. They seem to be really pushy and want you to order more than you want. But I think it depends on the waiter you get as well. I might not return there.

OK... The Mogul really needs to be experienced on a busy night - I think the menu is shortened during the week and at quiet times.
Always book and sit downstairs (in a cellar alcove if possible) it's far more atmospheric...
I'd recommend any of the Lamb dishes and you must try one of the dals - awesome.
Yes.. the loo is a climb - but the food is amazing.

My partner and I have been to the Mogul a few times over the last 6 months. Three of the visits went well - the food was very good (although a little expensive compared to most Indian restaurants) and the service was reasonable. The place itself is quite small and so can be cramped depending on where you sit.
However the last time we visited, the experience was very poor. The service was terrible - we barely received a welcome and our order (drinks, not food) was only taken about 15 minutes after we arrived, after we chased the waiter. The food arrived cold after 45 minutes - one item had a skin on it. On complaining, the food was brought out again a little better (only reheated) - but it was the attitude and moodiness of our waiter that really upset us. Eventually we spoke to the manager who gave us a 50% discount and apologised which mediated things a little. Apparently there has been a fairly recent change in operation methods/staff.
However, we will not be going back because even though the food is generally good, I wouldn't go back to a place with such a variable quality of service.

I have been living in Greenwich for 12 years and this restaurant has never let me down. It is still by far the best Indian food I have ever tasted. I recommend it to all my friends and I have never met anyone who hasn't been impressed. Its a little pricier than a lot of Indian's but the quality of food is outstanding. The upstairs is cramped but downstairs is superbly atmospheric. Another reviewer was right about the the stairs though, do not try to go to the toilet after a couple of glasses of wine, they are a bit tricky. Try the Nepalese Khuta you will not be disappointed.

THE WORST EVER INDIAN RESTAURANT!
I can hardly believe the good reviews posted here. Are we talking about the same restaurant? I went to Mogul Greenwich 2 weeks ago, on a Saturday night. We had a table for 4 booked and specifically asked for a table downstairs, which they said was fine.
When we got there we were greeted by a bloke who barely acknowledged us and ushered us downstairs. Another guy then said "NO. Upstairs only" and waved us rudely back upstairs.
We went back up to find our table was by the toilets. No one had said “hello”, “what would you like?”, asked us for drinks or anything. After 15 minutes I had to get up and ask for drinks. We were totally blanked by the ignorant looking miserable bloke behind the bar. All the other staff looked really miserable too.
Once we ordered the food (after having to get a waiter's attention again) we chatted over our first drinks. 30 minutes later - no word from the waiters... I had to ask for another round of drinks. No apology for the late food, no one asking if we wanted another drink as we say with empty glasses.
Finally after being in there for 1 hour 15 minutes, and still without our food, or any service whatsoever, we decided enough is enough and got up. I said "…we have had enough, we are leaving…" and incredibly Mr Happy seemed to be expecting it as if it happens every night. He said “ok - I will get your bill”.
Drinks came to £9.40 (he only remembered to charge us for the first round) and I handed him £10. He said "Thanks goodnight." as if he would keep the change. I asked "What about my change???" He said indignantly” I will need to go downstairs for it!" …. I said "off you go then - I will wait here" and made him go and get my change.
NEVER go to that place. It is the worse service I have ever encountered.
Just for your info - we then took a cab to the most fantastic Indian in London in my opinion. Curry Asia in Woolwich…. And Yes, I did say Woolwich! Get a cab there and try it. Service and food is impeccable.
