Star of India

The Tiffin Tin in Wantstead was shut last night because of the snow so we thought we'd try a takeaway from this place, which appears to be a bit of a Leytonstone institution. Admittedly they fought their way through the snowy streets to bring our food but otherwise we were disappointed. My mushroom vindaloo was ok, as was the Bombay potato. The tarka dal was watery and not very tasty. My wife's lamb dish appeared to have pieces of car tyre in it and she left it half way through. We'd order from the Tiffin Tin and eat out at 62 Spice in Wanstead any day rather than try the Star of India again.

A good place for anyone who doesn't eat meat as there is a wider than usual variety of vegetable dishes and a number of fish dishes that are not usually found in local indian restaurants.
The restaurant has an impressive number of awards to its name and on the Friday evening it had a lively yet relaxed atmosphere.
Prices are reasonable and in view of the excellence of the food this is very good value for money.

Cold food, only 4 small peices of chicken in my tikka masala, so very pricey for small portions of watery strange coloured dishes, the Saag paneer was disgusting, ordered a take away here before and it was the same, i should have thrown the menu as it was picked up by mistake and ordered from by a friend......YUK

My wife and I visited the Star of India yesterday. We went for the all you can eat buffet.
The service was very good, couple of guys who were very helpful.
The food was very nice, BUT with all the food on the buffet there was no beef or lamb options just 2 chicken curries.
Overall it was nice.

Never mind the red carpets, I mean chicken tikka masala was introduced to India just the other day. Star of India offers excellent quality, authentic food, as good as it gets in UK.
I use to eat their a lot before a geographical job move. They do not use any colours on thier food.
Their menu price is not fantastic value but shah always offers great deals for small groups and parties.
The portions are more than generous too.

I eat here regularly - the food is always great and now that the staff know us, the service is always excellant.
I have to admit, everytime we eat in a different resturant - we also say "We should have gone to Star"
Great Food! Enuff Said

Firstly, I must explain that I am genuine and post under my own name. Search for my many other reviews of restaurants and theatres. I am totally independent and pay for my meals and theatre tickets although I would welcome offers of invitations to theatre press nights.
Shar is the owner, although having said that, he did not come and introduce himself yesterday when I was there although he did speak to some other diners. Some very bad reviews may have been "planted" and as there are two other Indian places close by thats perhaps only to be expected although the web site should weed them out.
Back to this restaurant! It is rather above average but then the owner is very experienced at talking it up on the internet and by any other method he can find.
There are a wide range of dishes including many fish recipies. Although it says everything is freshly cooked thats only true to a degree as most of the sauces are based on the same basic sauce with perhaps some extra ingredients. There is not as much of the special ingredients as I would have expected in for instance the "honey and mustard" lamb where, if it was there, it was hardly discernable!
The pilau rice was white and more fried rice than the more usual saffron colour we have come to expect, it was fine for me but might not please some.
Its totally unlikely when viewed from outside as it looks small and rather poky. Step inside and its very spacious and nicely decorated and I have to say looks clean!
Eat as much on Sunday lunchtimes and currently on Monday and Tuesday evenings but check before going on that as it might change as the recession recedes. I have not tried that yet and will do so in a week or two.
They do hold open the door when you leave though.

Well regardless of previous reviews this restaurant constantly wins praise and prizes from local paper. Great food and special offers, has a sister take away called the Zaffran (Chingford ) which is excellent too.

Went here again recently and it was ok. Had not been in about 2yrs and once again it was pretty mediocre. Still had a nice time but the service, food and decor are nothing special.
