Auberge is one of the worst eateries I've ever been in, it's a crash course in how not to run a restaurant. You want to know how to get such a simple dish as cod and chips so spectacularly wrong? Pop along to Auberge, and try theirs, it's a damp, flavourless, listless lump of - well, I'm not even convinced that it was cod, I think they bought in the much cheaper Hoki, the tastless, unfishy stuff Mc Ds use to make their awful filet-o-fish, and fobbed us off with that. Even the chips were appalling, hard, cold, extruded bits of, I think, extruded, rather than sliced potato. Add to that warm, greasy salads, sauces that all tasted of cheap vinegar, and terrible terrible service, and you've got a place I will never, ever visit again.

A visit to this restaurant was distinctly unpleasant. Two of us ordered the 'herb crusted lamb' to be given herb crust with some fairly unappetising scraps of lamb. My wife ordered the pork and received a couple of pieces of overdone pork with spinach that was completely devoid of any seasoning. The scallop potatoes were deep fat fried. The seafood skewer which boasted of king prawn was a joke. The serving staff were obviously overworked and did their best given the rubbish they were asked to serve. The toilets, should you venture down the flights of stairs were filthy.

Ok so we only came here because it was raining and Don Felipe was full but Auberge certainly lost a chance to win us over. The food was sub-standard pub fare at restaurant prices - ersatz half-baked rolls, frozen, reconstituted chips [why in England do you have to go somewhere expensive and gastronomique to get a peeled, sliced potato!?], tired steaks, generic bought-in puddings. The pub tables needed a good clean as did the cutlery and the ambiance was miserable and gloomy. The waitress tried and the Goerges du Beouff beaujolais was nice but for almost £50 a head we expected fresher, better food in this sad, brown pub.
