My husband and I were quite disappointed with Mestizo. We're big fans of Mexican food, but the food here seemed no better than average and very expensive! We paid £28 for my main course (fillet steak and a chicken enchilada)... the enchilada was small and fairly bland, and the steak was quite awful. I ate about 2 bites. My husband ordered a mole dish, which was also fairly small. Margaritas were average. The service seemed good though - the staff were pleasant and we were served quickly.

First visit to this really good restaurant. First class service and the food was amazing - started with saring a couple of tamales and couple of torillas filled with vegetables including cactus - it was brilliant! followed by a classic mole dish served in a cauldron of sizzeling mixed meat and vegetables with corn torillas. A good bottle of reasonably priced Sauvignon Blanc, polished off they a Tequila liqueur - FAB!!

A group of us called to reserve a table at Mestizo (9pm) and we were told the kitchen shut at 11.00pm. We arrived just before 10pm and throughout the entire evening were treated rudely, with disregard and made to feel that we were a major inconvenience to the staff. We ordered immediately on arriving--after being glared at--and had our food slammed down in front of us. In an effort to get us out of there sooner, the waitress poured drink for someone who wasnt drinking and then attempted to take very expensive margarita pitchers away that were not yet finished. Message to Mestizo, if you don't need the business or can't be courteous, please let us know when we call. Having to pay a nearly £30 service (what service?) charge is the ultimate slap in the face. I used to come here often, with clients. I will take my business elsewhere.

Mestizo deserves its good reputation for great Mexican food that dares to be a little different. This is absolutely not just another Burrito joint.

During our visit the service was very fast, if not very personal (different people serving us throughout the meal).

I would recommend this upmarket Mexican to people who long for authentic tastes and are prepared to pay for it. Good food doesn't come cheap.

i booked a table last thursday for 6 people, we went there at the happy hour so we were plenty of cocktails and had wonderful food. That day there is also tacos downstairs and music so we moved there after the meal to dance. That was pretty cool despite they close a bit early. Me and my friends were very pleased.

went there with about 25 people for a birthday dinner the other night and unfortunately i think i was the only person out of the lot who ended up having any bad luck! waiter kept getting my drink orders wrong, then i decided to try a coconut frozen margarita which i wouldn't reccomend to anyone- it tasted like dirty ice/ snow and was so bland and nasty. drank it anyway, mainly because i didn't want to waste my £7.50! I was also shocked by the prices of the dishes, not a single main meal under £12 and it got me wondering why my friend had chosen this place as we are not exactly a high-wage earning bunch! when my food arrived, last out of everybody, it was pretty unsubstantial and not very well presented at all, in my opinion. (£14 for a bit of chicken, rice and beans??) All in all, I thought it was pretty extortionate and rather plain, and the size of the cocktails was a bit of a joke considering how expensive they were. Having sat us all downstairs on a massive table I didn't really notice much 'atmosphere' at all apart from a continuous 10-min loop of a travel agents' video ad for mexico and repetitive, suitably non-authentic music like eminem! Not impressed at all, will never go back.

i had been there before having really good drinks, but then i realized that thay had changed some drinks at the menu. Despite i had never tasted those drinks, those were very nice too. That was a good chance to taste something different at a very good mexican restaurant.

Me and my girlfriend had a nice evening a couple of days ago. Although we had to wait for a couple of minutes at the bar because the place was full, we enjoyed dinking there some lovely cocktails while we got our table. The dishes were very tasty, we were very pleased in eating and drinking real mexican stuff there!!!!

We were there just over a week ago and had such a bad time I'm determined not to go back. Our waitress was just awful. She messed up our order and when we told her she'd brought the wrong dish, she started arguing with us about it and went on arguing and saying we had ordered wrongly. Eventually it got sorted out and she brought the right food and then when we said thank you, she started arguing with us again! I mean who argues when someone says thank you??!! Unbelievable! It ruined our meal really. I sent an email to Mestizo the next day, but over a week has gone by now and they haven't responded. I'm just really disappointed as we've had no problem there before and the food is great but I'm damned if I'm going to pay good money to be spoken to like that again.

Although the food was lovely, the service was very slow - the waitresses purposesly avoided catching my eye when I was trying to order more drinks. They didn't serve all the dishes we'd asked for (although - I checked! - they didn't charge for them). Also the waitress' english was very poor and our order had to be repeated several times and they still got it wrong.

As a result we didn't pay the full 12.5% 'discretionary' service charge which led to an ugly confrontation in the street outside.

Despite the excellent food, we won't be going back, which is a shame.

Cheese and Biscuits - 6/10

Monday, March 14, 2011 - The Gordita was a new one on me, a kind of fried corn pancake thing filled with pabellon - shredded beef with a tomato/chilli sauce. Crunchy on the outside, not too greasy, and containing a decent amount of moist beef, it was a very good example of what street food can be - pleasant texture contrasts, edible without cutlery, tasty and addictive. At 4.50 it wasn't hugely expensive either. At 7.20 however, the flautas couldn't really justify the markup...The frustrating truth is, if you stuck to beers and the smaller dishes and turned a blind eye to the prices, you could have a genuinely lovely meal at Mestizo. The stuff they do well they do very well, and the stuff they don't do well is easily avoided.
