The waitresses in this place are so rude it is almost comical. Went there to try and enjoy the game the other night and, after being accused of sitting in the wrong chairs?!, were then subjected to two hours of continuous harrassment including: every time they walked past our table complaining loudly at us; continually coming over to try and remove us from our seats; pushing us and our chairs around; making a special detour to pass our table every time they had to serve something- even if it was at the opposite end of the room and then pretending to be unable to get past and proceeding to moan at us and generally stomping around the place with a face like a slapped backside.

Apart from that the pub is pleasant enough.

If you do go there, however, choose your seats with extreme caution.

I have been to the Duke of Clarence on a few occasions for a Sunday roast. The food is normally good, but the service extremely poor, and on my last visit I was really disappointed. The waitress was without a doubt the rudest and most inefficient server I have ever had. Although it wasn't busy, I waited twenty minutes for my drink to arrive, and had to ask her where it was twice. We had to flag down the manager to ask if we could order when she was standing about five feet away, staring blankly at the bar. Then when our food came, one of the meals arrived a good twenty minutes after the other two, meaning that we had already finished. The roast was sub-standard, the yorkshire pudding completely solid and doughy, and the vegetables soggy. The waitress was completely unapologetic and said neither sorry nor thank you on any occasion. As someone who works in the industry, for the first time in my life I left without tipping. I will certainly never be going back, and I recommend they review their staff as soon as possible.

I have lived around the corner for years and often been a little disappointed by the food, but was in for a very pleasant surprise on Friday night when my girlfriend and I gave it another try. The pub apparently has a new chef, who clearly sources his ingredients very well. My prosciutto was excellent and the lady's goat's cheese tart thing was a cracker. I had the biggest fish cake I have ever seen and her Eggs Benedict outshone many local "brunch speacialists". Impressive all round.

Upon arriving the decor and ambiance seems rather airy and enjoyable but on a sunday early afternnon after a night out the smoke is noticable and might put some people off.

I was with a couple of friends and we waited for 10-15 minutes to get a table which by London standards is very good.

We waited at least for another 15 minutes before we could order and we went for the sunday roast beef and the chicken roast.

After 20 minutes or so we enquired as to the whereabouts of the food, and were told it was on it's way. After a further 25 minutes we were told there had been a mix up in the kitchen and that it would be another couple of minutes. 5 minutes later, it was quarter to three and one of my firends had to leave. We had arrived at 1.45pm. The waitress informed him that he couldn't cancel the order but after a little insistance she said she would see what she could do. I cannot say we were best pleased that after an hour an 15minutes our friend went off to work on an empty stomach.

The food arrived at 3pm by which time I had seen the england rugby international and was halfway through a rugby league match.

After waiting for over an hour, I was served two small partially cooked thin stips of beef from scotland with raw carrots (lets say they tasted raw).

The Yorkshire pudding wasn't cooked proparly either, and I shared four roasted-ish potatoes and some cabbage and pees in a butter sauce with my girlfriend who was enjoying her chicken but found raw carrots a bit much also.

After this we asked for the bill, and were asked what we had and who had served us. I answered the second question.

The bill when it arrived was reasonnable but still contained the order of my departed friend which the owner then removed. He asked us how it was when it finally arrived and argued that he liked his carrots crunchy to my girlfriend who mentionned the distinct lack of cooking of the carrots.

Now, on a sunday pub lunch I don't expect fantastic food or excellent service and this pub is by no means pretending to be 'gastro', but I do expect to be served quickly tasty edible food. Sunday roast is certainly not exotic cooking in England, and the lack of information and effort left an even worse taste in my mouth than the food which was -outside of the chicken- poor. Not worth venturing to if you have any expectations for a nice pub meal on a Sunday.
