The Duchess of Kent should call itself a restaurant and be done with it. I have a soft spot for The Duchess as i remember when it was called The Fox and Fiddle back in the day.
Any road, I met a friend for a drink in their last night, and it reminded me of a bed sit or studio flat where you have the kitchen and living room in the same living space. There is a pokey corner where you can sit down and have a beer (if you get there at five o'clock - any later and you are doomed). In the restaurant area all the tables were empty and all had 'reserved' on them. Bar one. I clocked it and sat down. I could see the waitress was visibly gutted at her oversight and eventually she came over and said that at some point the table 'might be needed'.
Well in the end it was. By me and my friend. We had two lovely mains and a nice bottle of red Rioja. £25 each in total and the food was good and it was washed down with a nice red.
Just dont call it a pub.

Best local pub. The bar staff are so lovely and obliging. I would recommend this pub for food, wine and service.

This is an attractive pub that attracts attractive professionals. If this place was in Fulham, there'd probably be braying and rugby shirts. No danger of that in Islington though. The clientele here are rather cooler.
Have to say, the bar snacks on my visit were exemplary: homemade Scotch eggs were a revelation. Quite the best thing to eat with a pint of (rather expensive) Budvar. The pork pie was equally gratifying.
I shall return.
