Old Compton Street is one of the Capital’s more colourful Streets, bringing together a rich mix of London life. It provides an eclectic clutch of gay bars and clubs, shops selling exotic or trendy clothing, coffee bars, high end patisseries and a wide range of cafes and restaurants. The Boulevard Dining Room at the Wardour Street end of this bustling street has a 70’s feel about it with a good sized bar to the front and a main dining area situated to the rear, protected from the busy front of house and a bit of a sanctuary from this popular street.

A basket of good quality breads with a dish of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, which we devoured whilst choosing our starters and mains, was a nice touch and very pleasant. For starters the Buffalo Mozzarella and Plum Tomato Salad delivered exactly what was expected, a light and subtle dish supported well by the scoops of purple aubergine ‘caviar’ and drizzle of basil oil. The Crispy Duck Salad brought together a lightly crisp portion of duck in a good salad of shredded lettuce with sliced baby onions and crisp lardons, which gave a nice salty dimension, contrasting well with the sweetness of the blood orange dressing. This was a fresh and interesting combination, which worked well together. Both were good starters.

On to mains, the Pan Fried Fillet of Beef was nicely tender, cooked medium rare as ordered and was accompanied well by the Jerusalem artichoke, pancetta and broad beans with a red wine reduction that had a good depth of flavour with a hint of spiciness. The Kentish Lamb was a tender hunk of meat, set off well by the herb mustard crust and well supported by the bed of scallion new potatoes – very much like the Irish dish ‘champ’- it was sat on plus a scattering of broad beans. Both dishes were beautifully presented and very tasty.

For dessert the chocolate and banana bread pudding, had both flavours coming through well, it was rich and comforting. The Chocolate torte with fig and brandy was quite seriously chocolaty, chewy yet crunchy from the fig; it was really a quite decadent confection. These were two lovely and quite rich desserts that brought the meal to a very satisfying close.

We started the meal with a glass of the house white, which at £13 a bottler, was fruity and dry. We moved on to a nice cabernet sauvignon which at £14 a bottle was very acceptable and accompanied our main course well. The Boulevard Dining Room delivers lovely food that is well presented with service that is good and attentive.

Very very dissapointed. The main course salad was ridiculously small, barely passing for a starter in my view. I queried it with the waitress who said that that was it. We decided not to bother with dessert or coffee because of that and on reciept of the bill noticed we had been overcharged for the water (menu £1.95 per bottle, but £2.50 on the bill). Again pointed out the the waitress whose reply, was "oh yes, we noticed that with another customer". It was corrected. I spoke to the manager on the way out and expressed my great disappointment overall and why. He politely said he would have a word with the chef about portion size, but no attempt to genuinely correct the situation overall. I felt as though I had been conned and nothing would change, it spoilt my evening.

I am currently performing in the West End production of Les Miserables at The Queen's Theater. Boulevard has been our post-show refuge for months. I must say we have always been quite satisfied. Of course, the menu is somewhat overpriced for food that you can get practically anywhere else, and on weekend evenings the stereo can be a touch too loud to be able to hold a conversation. That said, it has always been our place for a quick drink and (on the odd occasion that we got there before the kitchen closed!) nibbles. Hey, we're actors! We can make ourselves comfortable in any setting. We have, in time, become quite familiar with the waitstaff. The have always been topnotch. It felt like home to us.

That was until two weeks ago. It was a Saturday evening. Five castmates and I had been given a table at the front of the establishment. A bottle of wine and a few beers were ordered, and we were enjoying a leisurely end of the week chat before going our separate ways for a Sunday off.

Twenty-five minutes into our stay, we were approached by a gentleman who seemed to be in management. I say "seemed" because, in the months that I have frequented Boulevard, I had never seen him before. The gentleman informed us that there was a table in the back, where we could adjourn. We promptly asked for an explanation. We were quite comfortable. And in the past 6 months or so that we had been regulars there, we'd never been asked to move from a table...to the back! We were then informed that we were disturbing the "diners". This had to be investigated! The only guests eating in our section, were two gentlemen seated two tables away, completely oblivious to anything but their Boulevard Burgers. The kitchen had closed as well. It was now past 11pm! The gentleman insisted we pick up our wine bottle and cocktails, and trek through a very crowded Saturday night Bar to the rear of the establishment. We answered with, "No Thank You," and that we would finish our drinks and leave. We were greeted with, "Hey, that's your choice!" It was, at that. Upon leaving, I approached the gentleman. I Informed him of the frequency of our past visits. I then added that I, as a regular patron, was insulted. We have ALWAYS treated the staff and bar itself with respect. It was practically our canteen! I would understand the removal of a rowdy bunch. I would understand if property had been damaged or there had been complaints. This was not the case. We had been sitting twenty-five minutes with a bottle of wine. We loved coming, but we would NOT return! I received a shrug of his shoulders and a "Good Night, Sir".

Judging from several of the reviews on this site, I would think BOULEVARD would be happy and PROUD to have patrons who come back as often as we had. Patrons who are in the media, and recommend restaurants to guests of this well visited show. I wish them luck, for they will not receive any more visits from myself or other members of our cast!

The venue's previous incarnation as The Dome was in my opinion far superior to this woeful substitute. The surly and frankly unprofessional waiting staff (how many waiters do you know that don't even write your order down?) started our group on a downward spiral that ended with me losing all hope.

Other tables appeared to be having the similar issues when an order for omelette's turned up with entirely different fillings to the ones ordered! Our Maitre 'd was imposing and had unfortunately confused rudeness with efficiency - no wonder the waiting staff were confused with such poor leadership.

My group all chose from the "large plate" selection, asking for steaks to be cooked to three specifically different states - something not usually beyond most establishments - unfortunately, they all came back the same consistency. This was followed by a burnt dessert.

The whole farce was concluded when we asked to have the "discretionary" service charge removed and was questioned.. whatever happened to good service and the customer is always right!?

For a restaurant in such a vibrant part of London, it was rather depresseing to have a celebration meal at the Boulevard Dining Room. The food was shockingly poor for the price and frankly, if it was not for the company I was in, I would have walked out. They only served meals from the Brunch menu (at 13h30??!!) but then offer you a much bigger menu when it's time to choose desert, just to tempt you with the selection you COULD have chosen from.

I will never go back there, not when there are so many good places to choose from.

Having visited this place for Sunday lunch, our first disappointment was learning that in fact we could only have "brunch" and our choices were limited to a very small breakfast type menu, which was served until 4pm. The disppointments then came thick and fast, in the form of an extremely rude maitre d', lazy, slow service from a bewildering number of different people, over-cooked steaks, burnt pudding and a cross-examination when we asked for the "discretionary service charge" to be removed from the bill.

Give this place a miss until it sorts out its prices, service and last but not least, it's food. After waiting over an hr we had to send two meals back but the rest of us let hunger prevail and I made do with some average duck breast and almost fondant potatoat around 15 quid. Plenty of better and cheaper places in London

I've been to Boulevard a few times though I wouldn't go back again by choice. The waiting staff are generally friendly enough and the atmosphere is great but I always leave feeling a bit ripped off. The food choice is small from the £15 set menu but that's not unusual for a fixed price menu. The thing that most disappoints me is the food itself; the portions are on the small side, it is generally bland and/or poorly cooked and leaves me feeling like I made a bad menu choice... but now I've tried a few of their dishes I have realised that leaving feeling like want something more is par for the course at Boulevard. It’s a shame that doesn't live up to the expectation set by the ambience and service and you probably pay a premium for the touristy location but there are plenty of better restaurants within a short walk.

Shocking is the only way I can describe the Boulevard Dining Room.

The special offer of £15 for 3 and bubbly is very very limited and the food is really not great.

We decided not to go for the fixed price menu in the end and chose off the wider menu.

The food was generally overpriced, over cooked and not at all impressive. The wine was terrible, the 'hand cup chips' were soggy and tasteless and there were flies buzzing around our head and our food.

The service was ok and but I had olive oil dropped on my coat.

All I can say, is don't bother, there are so many other wonderful places in London to spend your hard earned wage!

Myself and a friend went to the Boulevard Dining room to sample the special offer - three courses and a glass of bubbly for £15. Unfortunately we were not impressed.

Firstly, despite calling ahead to explain my friend is a coeliac (cannot eat wheat or gluten) and being promised she could swap any course from the main menu if she couldn't eat what was on offer and still pay the £15, we were told we'd have to pay the difference and not order anything too extravagent. The waiter was not clued up on what the food consisted of which meant it took a very long while for my friend to find something she could eat. We were then served the wrong staters and the waiter forgot to give my friend a spoon for her soup so we had to grab another waitresses attention. Mains were ok, but we had to order a side dish to fill us up. Lastly, we were forced to pay the "optional" service charge which we thought was unnecessary after the poor service.

We won't be going back any time soon which is a shame after the good reviews i had read previously to booking a table.

We ate at the Boulevard Dining Room in a party of 10 on 1 September. It was absolutely excellent value for money. We had the Special £15 per head menu, which included a glass of champagne. Being in a large group we had a cover charge, and 12.5% service was added too, but it was still well worth it. The menu choices were very good, and even with the limited range we were spolit for choice. All of the food was superbly prepared and presented. The staff were friendly and attentive, there when we needed them, discretely 'observing' when we didn't! Water was served without asking, and topped up likewise throughout the meal. A rude (completely unjustifiably) customer was politely, but firmly dealt with also, which was impressive in itself as most of the staff looked pretty young. I have already recommended this place to a number of friends, and would certainly go there again.
