After calling the Trafalgar Tavern at 1pm to try to book a table today (27 April) and being told that we couldn't do this but not to worry as food was being served until 4pm, we arrived at the pub at 2pm. We were then told that we'd have a 30-45 min wait for a table so we bought drinks. 45 minutes later we were informed that there was no Sunday roast left and handed a very poor menu with no other appealing options. We decided to speak to the restaurant staff to express our dissatisfaction with the service received and were sniggered at by them. I would recommend not bothering to waste time visiting this chaotic venue due to the inexperienced and unprofessional staff. Based on the level of service, I imagine the food was not worth the wait.

Went there yesterday for lunch. Food was expensive and poor quality. Cold plate, tepid chips (make from old black potatoes), burger raw in the middle. My other half had steak in "rustic bread" - manky old ciabatta.

I usually give places the benfit of the doubt but this was very, very poor. Not only had they lost a booking that had been made in person, the food was served by obviously harrassed staff, the fish was over cooked, the roast beef chewy, and we couldn't wait to get out. Lunch for four children and 1 adult (we were on two tables because of the booking screw up) consisted of 4 fish and chips, 1 chips, 1 whitebait and five ice creams and two (soft) drinks each. Bill: £114.00. I would not begrudge paying over £20 per head for fish and chips and ice cream if the atmosphere and food were good but as quite a number of the reviews hereunder imply, they are obviously just trading on the tourist market. Avoid.

Great location, lovely building, spoiled by a manager who refuses to turn the heating on in winter. As locals, we have asked on numerous occasions for the heating to be turned up/on, and have always been fobbed off with replies such as 'it is already on', or 'it's broken'. If we go there for a drink, we keep our coats on.

Three of us ate Sunday lunch there a couple of weeks ago. I think the location and the general ambience absolutely fantastic. I live in the area and often used to visit for a dinner, it used to be relatively simple faire that was quite well cooked at an acceptable price. About two years ago we had a meal that was quite simply awfull and although we've been there many times since for a beer, we had not eaten there again until a couple of Sundays ago. We had Sunday lunch. The Fish and Chips were dry , and the Sunday ( Beef ) Roasts were terrible, and this was worsened by them being drenched in a diabolical sauce. We complained and were advised that the sauce was " jus " and not " gravy " as I called it, and further more no one else had complained. I asked how long the chef had worked there and was told five years. We complained then, and were told the same thing. The restaurent would undoubtedly be super busy if they would listen. I know all tastes vary, but it cannot be emphasised how positively bad the food is. The Manager and Chef are costig the Restaurent dear just because they don't listen to complaints. Please send in Gorden Ramsey

Regards

18 months ago it was very good in all areas but evening dinner there in Jan 07 was not great.

Portions were small and quite minimalist. Service was slow and prices were steep.

The range on the menu is good considering the small number of items and they are generally cooked well but I was less than satisfied at the end.

Dinner for 6 with mains, dessert and two bottles of wine was £180 - I think £100 would have been more suitable and the group would probably have been more satisfied with Pizza Express at a lot less.

At the moment only good for a pint in the window...

We had a great Sunday Lunch here. The waitresses were really friendly and helpful. The food was lovely , the meat tender with superb gravy and the puddings wonderful. I would definitely recommend the Trafalgar Tavern for a 'Special' sunday lunch.

I have to say I agree with the recent negative reviews: I've been there a couple of times over the last couple of months (the second time hoping the first time I was unlucky) and both times it was very disappointing. The service is appalling and when we left, one of the staff was downright rude to us. It's a real shame because the building is wonderful, but maybe that's why - they don't need to rely on local trade (which we are). We won't be going back - there are too many good pubs just a few paces away.

Very very disappointing. We used to come here all the time but The Trafalgar Tavern seems to be past it's hey day. Long gone is the warm greeting of the friendly staff, the cosy atmosphere, the gorgeous food. All to be replaced with staff who really don't care, a tired dirty and old (in the bad sense of the word)looking interior and dismal food that tries hard but comes out looking and tasting terrible, must be cooked by someone who has no idea of good english fare. I shall miss the Trafalgar of last summer and hope it one day returns to it's former glory.
