Food is excellent . I've eaten four times in the restaurant - haddock and chips, lamb, sausages and the steak. i would give ten out of ten for the food - maybe the portions could be better.

My partner and I live in Wapping and have eaten at the Captain Kidd a number of times. Three of us attempted to have Sunday lunch last weekend. We entered the restaurant at 13.25 and none of the tables were occupied apart from one where a couple sat. We asked about sitting at the table in the window which was laid for four and were advised that we could not have that as it was possible to lay that table for six and a party of six MIGHT come along. We pointed out that it was 13.25 and that the restaurant was all but empty and surely three people sitting at the table dining was preferable to a 'might-be' table of six coming along later. Such remonstrations I am afraid were lost on the senior barmaid who we had met before. Needless to say we left; totally disgisted. It will be a long time before I as a Wapping local darken the door of the Captain Kidd again. Totally nutty or what!

Interesting comments. Have been twice to Captain Kidds.

The first time my date had sole in champange sauce, I had the royal venison.

The food was great - I could see why the Kings of England kept the riff raft out of Richmond park just for Vension! The service was excellent, unobtrusive and attentive. This was on a weeknight.

In fact it was such a good experience and great night, I decided to take another date there months later though it was miles across London and we had to spend hours on the underground. When we arrived, the menu had changed somewhat. The wild boar sausages and vension were pale imitations in both portion size and standard of what went beforehand. The service was still good, but the food is the main thing for me. I left shocked and disappointed. This was a weekend.

I guess you have to phone first and see which chef is on and guess what the food is like. The dishes of the first visit I could think of where to get similar in London, but after the appalling food of the 2nd visit I am not going back.

I totally agree - I took my parents to the Captain Kidd which although blessed with superb views and location the food was awful. All of our dishes were covered in sea salt so much so that the chef must have threw a handful on each before serving - my dish contained sun dried tomatoes and my parents had duck in a bacon sauce - no way did they need any extra although we guessed this was to disguise the awful poor quality food underneath! The wines were not much better with an extremely limited choice, two reds and two whites, for a change one glass was definitely enough!

Sunday lunch is rubbish - roast potatoes that have been reheated and deep fried, and vegetables that seemed like they had come out of a freezer bag. The vegetarian offering was a joke - you just get a plate of veg and and extra yorkshire pudding, for which they expect to charge the same amount as full roast with lamb!!! Totally dry, no veg gracy or other sauce was available. Staff, rude and totally unapologetic. They have also introduced a new system where they charge you for paying on a card.

Cpt Kidd is a nice place for a drink but I found the food that they served frankly embarrassing and as I had taken guests there, this was not ideal.

The Town of Ramsgate down the road on the other hand...

Good food, good value, great views and unlike lany London restaurants, the tables are not shoe horned in together so there is actually enough space for the staff to move around with out disturbing your meal by pushing past.

I hav eeaten at the Gallows many many times over the last 2 years and have never been anything other than delighted. The setting is superb; a table against the window overlooking the Thames, crisp white table linen, sparkling glass and excellent service. The wine list is straightforward but more than adequate and the food is to die for. Over my many visits I have enjoyed the wild boar sausages, crsip battered haddock and superb steaks. I cannot praise this restaurant highly enough - particularly when you rarely end up paying more than £30 per heasd with a bottle of wine! Give it a try - you will not be dissappointed!

It amazes me that nobody has reviewed this restaurant yet. The 'Gallows Restaurant' is actually situated upstairs at the Captain Kidd and has a fantastic view of the Thames. The interior is charming and the service from the friendly staff impeccable. As a vegetarian I am usually faced with just one option when dining out but not so here. There were three delicious main courses to choose from and the staff even catered especially for my friend who has a nut allergy. I would definitely pay another visit.
