I can't really say anything bad about Mela. Our whole dining experience was brilliant. The food was adeptly cooked and flavoured exquisitely. The service staff were attentive and the food arrived after a tolerable wait. Will definitely need to go there again.

Mela seems to have lost its way recently. It started out well, full of promise but hasn't really delivered.
Problems:
1: It's TOO BRIGHT! The lighting is so stark it's almost unbearable. Try sitting in the restaurant for any length of time and you''l burn out your retinas Petek, next door, has a much superior ambience; Mela should take a leaf out of their book, perhaps?
2: Wine glasses are far too small for a modern restaurant. The competiton has much better to offer.
3: The delivery service now takes up to an hour. This is too long. I have to use Balti King instead.
The staff are great, the food is usually great (although recently it's been quite average) and I would eat there more often if they made it a more pleasant atmosphere in which to dine.

I cant believe there are so many positive reviews for this restaurant, although they all sound suspiciously similar.
I went to this restaurant with my partner and two friends but definitely wont be going again. The food was far from authentic, so much so that we actually heard the microwave 'ping' a minute or so before the food arrived. My jalfrezi had little taste and no where near as much spice as the dish deserves. Two of my party decided on the balti and were horrified to find the pink centre inside the chicken.
We were the only people eating in the restuarant which should have been a warning sign. I have walked past on many other occasions since and very rarely is anyone eating inside.
The staff on the other hand are very friendly and welcoming.
With so many other very GOOD curry houses in the vicinity, I'd give this one a wide berth!

We went there open minded and with expectation (based on the reviews posted) but not matched by either the food or the service or the ambience. OK for somewhere to eat but certanly not a memorable night out. Plenty of other Indian restuarants around that can provide better than what we had this evening. Live (and eat) and learn.

mela is a great little curry house where you can eat like a celebrity at average joe price. we picked chef's specials Lamb Rezella (£5.95) and Chicken Hyderabadi(£6.50), accompanied by a perfectly spiced Chana Masala (£2.50), rice and nan bread. My rezella was a delicious combo of tender chunks of slow-cooked lamb in a hot and slightly tangy sauce with a hint of coconut, while my partner's milder Hyderabadi was a moreish dish of tandoori chicken in a tomato-based sauce with a touch of ginger and mango. both lived up to our expectations. and with such a popular and talented chef you never know who you might find yourself sitting next to. Finally, a decent Indian restaurant in the area. This is the best, and I've tried them all. The menu is authentic, extensive and well-researched. With many dishes from all over India, plus the old favourites, it's neither pretentious nor grotty. Straightforward, good food at a good price. It's not been open long, but already word-of-mouth is making it more popular. Try it.
