This was the worst meal I have ever eaten in a restaurant! I'm so glad it is now closed! They charged my partner and I extortionate prices for fried dough, garlic mushrooms (of which there were 2 tiny ones to share between us), stuffed peppers (which were not stuffed) and some fried cheese. This meal was extremely bland and totally unsatisfying!!

Having read the other reviews, I felt I had to add my two pennies worth. Living in Blackheath, we've been to Za a few times and the service and food has always been to a really high standard. I've recommended this place to a few others and they haven't had the same great experiences I have - obviously you either love it or hate it. Like others I really can't understand how people, including some who have tried Za, choose to go to the nearby Pizza Express. They obviously prefer their pizzas small, undercooked and overpriced. Having lived in London I can safely say this is the best pizza restaurant I've been to in the capital.

Superb Italian food with speciality dishes from Puglia. The service is friendly and attentive. However, harsh interior lighting removes any atmosphere and with the large street-facing window, it lacks privacy. If Za can improve this (candlelight on the tables and blinds over the window) they will have created a real gem.

Another time in Za another great nite.

Really i can't understand some people .

I'm from Naples where the pizza is born and in London this is the best pizza you can eat and they don't have a PIZZA OVEN !!! I had a selection off salumi artigianali that was better than the one ihad in one of the best Italian can't remeber Locanda something....Service was bit slow but you can enjoy the romantic view.

I've eaten at this restaurant several times as I'm a local and it is excellent. I can't believe people eat at the Pizza Express round the corner! Great pizza

What a dissapointing evening. We were seated downstairs as we had 7 in our party. We have never eatern at ZA and i can say that all 7 of us never will again. We waited at least 15 minutes to be given a menu and offered a drink. Food arrived and not one of us was excited about 'tucking in'. Suckling Pig & meatballs dishes were so awful they looked like they had been thrown togther and dumped on a plate at speed. My pizza was fine but there's not alot you can get wrong with a 3 cheese and tuna pizza. The other two pasta dishes were eatern and i was told that they were 'ok'. After the privlage we got charged double for the 'suckling pig' and for a starter that we didn't order. A memorable evening for all the wrong reasons.

Nice surprise given some of the comments below. We had the antipasti selection for 30 pounds which was more than enough for a complete meal for 2. Lots of interesting hot and cold dishes (salami, cheeses, bread, mussels, mushrooms to name a few) brought in stages. The rest of the menu also looked excellent offering something a bit different from the plethora of average italian restaurants we have in London. Staff were excellent and friendly. Generally a nice place, would definitely go again.

I feel very silly now having written an excellent review further down, I had really good meals in this place in the past but unfortunately it has changed for the worse!

We took some family last Saturday night and couldn't stop saying how wonderful the place was beforehand.

After arrival, we waited 30min for the starter which was fine, but the service was getting worse and worse by the minute. They now have some very pretty Italian girls standing around who are useless waitresses.

When our main arrived (I had ordered the seafood pasta) I had a plate of unopened mussels and tasteless pasta, my husband had the pork which had been wonderful in the past, this time, it looked and tasted just like cheapo gammon from Tesco and as that's not enough my sister in law's gnocchi was tasteless and bland.

I asked to speak to the Manager who was useless and couldn't answer back to anything, he didn't even offer a new fresh dish or gave us an excuse.

At the end, after waiting ages for the bill, he asked if we wanted complimentary coffee, to which we replied "no, we just don't want to pay for our terrible mains" so he had no choice than to take them off the bill. Very badly handled and I shall not be going back there again ever, there are plenty more places in Blackheath where they appreciate my hard earned money.

I know this place because more friends are talking about 'ZA. What i think? It's the best of the best in LONDON!!! I been there with my girlfriend last evening. Come on, the quality-price it's more than honest, there is the waiter, Enrico, he's very very funny and the chef Daniele he's very very puglian piccyotto! Anyway, if you want to touch the sky go there!

Ok food, but service is terribly slow - 20 minutes for drinks to arrive, and 1 hour for the pizzas which went to the wrong table. At the end of a tedious evening, we got someone else's bill.
