Went here for breakfast of a Saturday morning. Very much looking forward to visiting Roast having eaten from the stand in the market.

Incredibly mediocre and overpriced eggs benedict. Greeny-orange hollandaise quite possibly from a packet, two dried disks of salty bacon, truly underwhelming and especially for the price.

Will not be coming again.

I took a business party to dinner at Roast -- was very much looking forward to it as I often have a take-away sandwich from the Roast kiosk in Borough Market -- I am a meat lover -- and the pork sandwiches are very good.

Three of us ordered the special roast Lamb and one had a steak - not sure what the other ordered. All the lamb was way overdone -- to the point that I needed water to wash it down because it was so dry. The outside of the lamb was not edible.

The menu was not inexpensive by London standards.

I would not go back again.

What a disappointment this place is!! such a shame I didn't come across this website earlier as we might have avoided a mediocre and stunningly overpriced meal. We ordered at 9pm but our food didn't arrive until 10:20. When it did arrive I was gobsmacked that £15 of our english pounds only buys you 3 small scallops - are they serious!!?? I had the grouse, which for £30 was pretty unremarkable and not plucked properly. This gave it a rather bitter aftertaste. One of our party had to send back their partridge as it was completely overdone. It is also terribly draughty - I made the mistake of handing my sweater in at the door only to be chilled to the core and had to go and retrieve it shortly after sitting down. The location is the only thing going for this place - a terribly disappointing "Fine Dining" experience.

Went here last week and was disappointed as had been wanting to go for a while. Over priced, average food, and not very good service.

I had to ask for my drink twice, re-order side dishes that they forgot and were told that we were 'holding up the table' which hadn't been stipulated when we made the booking.

I will not be returning at will, unless they cut the prices or make the service amazing....

The restaurant is in a perfect location overlooking Borough Market. There ends the good news. We dropped in for lunch. The a la carte menu is priced at 5 star hotel levels. The portion of fish stew we chose at 20gbp was tiny, did not taste special and was just about warm. Service was attentive but there was an attempt to charge us for tap water.

Great location and ambience but I was very disappointed when I ate there last night. I felt ripped off for a £20 fish stew main course that was so small it should only have been a starter and which tasted quite frankly horrible. I won't be rushing back when there are so many other good restaurants in the area.

This has to be one of our most disappointing experience in a so-called nice restaurant...ever. Tasteless and bland food. I don't understand why it's called Roast. We had lunch on a Saturday, and we had to get something to eat at the market below right after. The food was overall mediocre, and the meat quality was so poor that even my 7 years old noticed that they did not know how to roast a chicken there, she thought it was boiled. My husband's lamb came overcooked and tasteless as well and was accompanied by some soaking peas (??). The worst was my dish. Supposedly a fish stew. It came with two bites of fish and four mussels surrounded by a grayish pink gelatiny broth. Even salt could not give it flavor. We each only had one glass of wine, and our bill was close to 150pounds.

Fortunately for them, they are in a superb location, and obviously right in the heart of a see of tourist. If your culinary expectations are still at the level of boiled roast beef and soft, mushy thick french fries, this is the place for you.

Nice surroundings, wildly overpriced, overcrowded, overrated. Service polite and tip hungry. As a restaurant wouldn't see out six months outside the capital.

Have been using Roast a few times recently but more just in the bar for drinks and snacks, so due to a family get together thought Sunday lunch would be good.

First off the place looks stunning with views over the market and even St Pauls. Our table for seven was huge (so often 7's seemed to get squashed) and the whole room feels light and airy.

Food on a Sunday is a set menu @ £32 for 3 courses and in truth was a mixed bag. Starters were all a bit plain, lacking in flavour and in my scallop dish, size as well, 3 queenies. Mains were however top notch, with the roast chicken, beef, pork and sucling pig all being both plentiful and packed with flavour. Puddings were however a bit like the starters, with the exception of the cheese. Strawberry and white chocolate mousse cake and some other plain sponge I cannot remember were not what I was expecting. Where was the trifle, crumble or steamed pudding ?

Service however was good, our waitress new the menu well and was helpful with any questions we had. The sommelier was also great and we had a decent Albarino to start, a few bottles of a cracking Pinot Noir from Washington and finished with a sweet wine from Kent.

Overall a very pleasent lunch, so much so that im going back on Saturday.

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

Monday, March 07, 2011 - The mains were at least warm, but were nothing to write home about. The sole (which was a megrim as advertised, and not a lemon sole as our waiter insisted) went down well and was a hefty beast. If there was a gripe, it was not hot enough to melt the shrimp butter on top. My main of pork belly was decent enough, with excellent crackling, but the meat was on the chewy side, and the apple sauce was poor at best, tasting and looking like apple flavoured baby food...y the time they had offered us dessert, we really just wanted to leave so we tried to settle the bill, but even that took a few goes to get somebodies/anybodies attention. The total bill pre voucher came to nearly 90 pounds.
