I decided to eat at the Hive last night before going to a concert at the Brixton Academy. Arrived at 7pm and the downstairs restaurant was almost full but fortunately I had reserved a table. Overall the venue and service were great, however, the food was quite bland.

We were greeted by a friendly waitress who seated us straight away. The tables are very large so there is a lot of space for plates and there is a decent amount of space between tables. The atmosphere was buzzing - an ideal dining place for a group of friends. Service throughout was efficient and warm.

The only let down was the food. It was very average. The roast duck had no crispiness to the skin, the potato dauphinoise was underseasoned and the green beans were overcooked.

We stopped off at the Hive Bar for a quick dinner on the Friday night of the John Mayer concert at the end of June. The food was excellent and the girls behind the bar worked very hard making sure all the tables were catered for. If only we could have something like the Hive Bar in West London.

I'm very surprised at the review below. I went to the Hive this week and had a great meal. Smoked Haddock on mustard mash, it was really really good. My friend had a beef stew that they really enjoyed as well. The staff were v relaxed and friendly. I'll definitely be going back

I was at the Hive last night and although the service was ok the food was awful and incredibly overpriced. My dinner was undercooked, very greasy and the chips seemed like they had been re-heated. And my friends burger was lukewarm and greasy. Would definately not recommend this place for food, but ok if you fancy a quiet drink then its fine.

I have been going to Hive for a year now and have never failed to get brilliant service and excellent food at a very reasonable price.

After working in the bar/restaurant industry for 10 years it amazes me why more places are not like this.

They do the best eggs benedict in London and fantastic 'home cooked' real food in the evening. Easily my favourite eatery in London Town. Keep it up Hive.

I have been to Hive 2 or 3 times in the last 2 months and have been delighted on every visit. The food, wine (the rioja is excellent) and decor and service have all improved since their refurbishment. Upstairs is an excellent bar open until 3am. The bar staff are friendly and the drinks are not over-priced.

Friends of mine hired the upstairs for a party (free of charge) - We tore the roof of the place.

Go to Hive and experience it for yourself. Don't listen to the other reviews on here as they are not up to date (before the refurbishment and new manager / staff)

very dissapointed. think they have changed staff recently. this placed used to serve great food reasonably priced, with good service. the last time i went, the service was dredful, the waitresses were actually abusive, our burgers looked like they had come from macdonalds up the road, and they couldn't get our orders right. shan't be returning to the Hive which is a shame as it has great potnetial

I went to Hive on Saturday afternoon for some quiet drinks and to taste some food from the new menu. I was pleasantly surprised with the interior and the chilled atmosphere. The place was reasonably full, which for an afternoon when the weather was so nice was a comforting sign. My friend and I shared a few beers, talked the afternoon away and managed to savour some of the Italian meatballs, which were amazing. I then got speaking to the chef and the proprieter and found out the chef is relatively new and Hive also has a new General Manager, Andy, who made the time to come over and speak to us to ensure things were ok. All in all a nice place, good food, chilled atmosphere.

As a long suffering brixtonite Hive has almost been there for me. The music and atmosphere have always been great but the food was nothing special, often slow especially when busy, and the furniture a little bare, especially upstairs. However, last Friday I popped in, as usual after work, to find a complete transformation. Upstairs has been completely refitted with leather banquettes and groovy new bee wallpaper, low candle lighting and proper liquor fuelled cocktails but most importantly there was a long overdue new menu which, according to the waitress, coincides with the appointment of a new head chef, and it showed. We had a combination of homemade pumpkin stuffed ravioli and figs stuffed with goats cheese and palma ham, presented well, served quick and tasted great. It looks like this place has finally got its act together. This time I really hope it lasts.
