Having spent the best part of five years in Japan, I have some idea of what it's all about.

There's more to Japanese food than Matsuri or Mitsukoshi, and Edo offers a realistic insight into what everyday Japanese food, such as you'd eat on the go in a Japanese city, is like. Not quite up to what you'd get in Japan, but well over 85% there, and most dishes in the 90%s.

It's a waste of time getting a taste of real Japanese beer in england - it's all brewed in Europe under licence (since around 1999) and doesn't taste the same. Ozeki sake is made in America, but tastes quite authentic for a sake equivalent of vin de table.

All in all, Edo does well in giving a taste of everyday Japan, especially considering it's run by a Hong Kong Chinese with Thai staff and cooks. Have to agree that the waiting staff need English (and some Japanese) lessons.

The low tables at the rear are great fun, and my one criticism is that they don't routinely lay chopsticks at the table with all dishes - fork and spoon instead.

A good detail is how the waitress comes back to pour the rest of your beer for you - de rigeur in civilised Japan unless you're dining with a partner, in which case you keep each other topped up.

Can't comment on the first review - I'm not accustomed to eating in morgues and then comparing the atmosphere with places run by people who are making a genuine effort.

A pale imitation of Japanese food in a restaurant with all the atmosphere of a morgue. The food is edible but that is about as far as I could praise it. if you want to have Japanese food go somewhere else.

Edo is one of of our regular, staff is very polite although not always helpful with choices on the menu, (I suspect due to a language barrier). The food is absolutely delicious and fresh, reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend it to everyone! Table have a... surprise. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

We went here for the first time last Friday night. The food was delicious - a platter of sushi was tasty and fresh and the seabass and crab & shrimp dumplings were great.

I cant wait to go back.

I popped into Edo for lunch today, and never having had Japanese food, I cautiously ordered Seafood Udon. To my surprise when it came it looked exactly like the picture on the menu. And tasted wonderful.

The staff were nice and friendly and when they noticed I was just about to get a parking ticket went to sort it out for me.

Would certainly go back in the future for a quiet lunch.

Went to Edo on a Tuesday night, and the place was empty - but pleasant enough anyway. The noodle and rice dishes were tasty and well priced at around £6, and the portions were large. My girlfriend (who lived in Japan for a year) thought the food was reasonably authentic, certainly compared with something like Wagamama. The sashimi and sushi seemed fresh, but slightly overpriced in my opinion. But saying that, the soft shell crab rolls were delicious and the highlight of the meal.

Unfortunately the waitress did not seem very knowledgable, and when asked whether she had recommendations, she simply suggested that we tried some sushi. Maybe this is because the staff were not Japanese.

A selection of sushi and sashimi, a rice dish and an udon dish, with two drinks came to about £35 including service.

So it's fairly reasonable, although possibly slightly more expensive than your average local Indian/Chinese.

I went to Edo last weekend and found pretty average food which I dont believe is authentic japanese. Sadly the curry was a little too salty and the seafood wasnt fresh. More of a takeaway with a few tables than a restaurant. The price was quite expensive considering this. The service was ok and the staff were pleasent but cant recommend this one for good Japanese food.

I think Edo is brilliant, I have been going at least twice a month for the last year and I have never had a bad meal - the food is consistently excellent. The sushi is the best I have ever eaten and the service is first class.

We visited Japan last summer and the food at Edo is just as good as anything we had there. The staff are lovely and the service is excellent. There is a lot of choice on the menu and everything we have tried so far has been delicious. I can't understand why this restaurant isn't packed every night. They also do take out - which is great!

This is a wonderful restaurant serving very well made and delicate food. The products are always of the highest qualiy.

We recommend especially the seabass, asparugus with pork, sesame icecream and the best Japanese soup we've ever had - Dobinmushi.

We've been to the restaurant about 15 times now and nothing we've tried has been bad quality.

Prices are average - if you avoid alcohol it is very reasonable!
