The Gold Coast Bar & Restaurant

Il try and keep it short
As a ghanaian I had to have high hopes for this place. Especially as they had the job of impressing me as well as my girlfriend (seems to be a common thing looking at these reviews)
Long story short, they done well! Cosy restaurant with interesting pieces of art. The service werent bad. pretty attentitive waiter. Im glad effort was made to make sure our order was correct
And of course, Jollof rice - Not as good as your mothers would be, but its far from bland. id recommend it as a side
All i can say is that this place should at least be given a chance. you may be suprised.
P.S. the restaurant is rather small. Think about a booking especially for the weekend, just in case

My first experience of cuisine from the boyfriend's Motherland and I totally loved it!!!
Ghanaian food from The Gold Coast definitely gets all four of our thumbs up :)
Reading some of the previous reviews and then having experienced it for myself makes me think either these people were either very fussy or me and my boyfriend are just very easy to please.
We made a reservation the day before our visit, when we arrived on the day the lady at the bar directed us to the seating area in the restaurant upstairs. There we were greeted and shown to our table by the waiter. Who through out our whole time there, was of great assistance. He took the time to confirm our order with us twice and even warned my boyfriend that what he was ordering (Akonfen) would be 'very spicy', of course this was not a problem for my boyfriend but I thought it was very nice of the waiter to do this as not everyone has a stomach for spice like my boyfriend. I was very happy with the service we received. The atmosphere of the restaurant itself was a very cosy one indeed- we really liked this about it. As for the food, our appetiser of Kelewele was YUM and the jollof rice was DELICIOUS!
Me and my boyfriend were very happy with the whole evening and left the place feeling glad we made the journey there all the way from east London. We will definitely be going back soon and would recommend it to anyone looking for a African restaurant where they will feel welcome and can expect food of a high standard.

I arrived at 6pm at the Gold Coast with my new English girlfriend in January 2011 and tried to impress her with some Ghanaian food. The staff did not notice us sitting down upstairs on our own for 20 minutes - it was very cold without any lights on - before taking our drinks order.
The service was so bad that my girlfriend wanted to leave straight away. However, I ordered a beer whilst my girlfriend request diet lemonade. A small Ghanaian guy working behind the bar - who looked about 16 - said that he had to go across the road to a shop to buy her drink. We also asked him to put the lights, heating & some music on. He just said okay, okay….
We also had to wait 60 minutes for our main order of Talapia fish, Rice and plantain. The fish was dry and cold and the plantain was very oily. I would have thrown it all in the bin if I was at home. I wouldn’t even give it to our dog. After complaining to the other staff all they could say was that the Chef was new and from Poland and that the heating system was faulty. We tried to eat it but my girlfriend could not. So we left to go to KFC instead.

After reading good reviews of the gold coast restaurant in south norwood I decided to take my girlfriend there on Valentines Day. This was my first introduction to Ghanaian food and will probably be my last. The bar downstairs seemed lively whereas the restaurant is upstairs.
We made a reservation and arrived on time for 7pm but had to wait for about 5 minutes to actually sit down. This wasn’t really an issue in the grand scheme of things. The restaurant was quite busy so it was another 20 minutes before a waitress took our drink order, which arrived 15 minutes later.
For starters we ordered yam balls and the chefs special dish (chargrilled chicken). And for main nyama choma (chargrilled lamb), and cape malay (chicken stew).
We had been waiting for roughly 25 minutes when the waitress returned to say one of the main dishes (nyama choma) had run out. So instead I ordered beef stew.
By then our patience was wearing thin but we didn’t complain. Looking around at the other tables everyone seemed in the same predicament, clueless and hungry. Finally our dishes arrived 1 hour 20 minutes later. They brought out both starters and one main at the same time.
To be honest the yam balls were pretty good, however I was disappointed with my starter, the chargrilled chicken. The meat fell apart in my hand and the flavour wasn’t to my liking.
The chicken stew main was overcooked, and wasn’t on the bone as described on the menu. The jollof rice itself was tasty.
I was still waiting for my main whilst my girlfriend tucked away into her food. For another 25-30 minutes I waited for my main but it finally arrived when I questioned the waitress. Unsurprisingly by the way the night was going the food was cold. This was the final straw and told the waitress. She said, “I’ll warm it up for you”. I said, “What, in a microwave?” and she goes “Yes”.
I told her that I don’t want the dish anymore and complained to the manager. He apologised reservedly and offered the meal for free. We accepted and left.
We took a long drive from east London to south Norwood but never again.

My first introduction to Ghanaian food and it was great! I have spent quite a bit of tim ein Africa (although not Ghana) and the bar really felt tlike it had an African vibe to it, especially as the evening wore on. The food was fresh, very filling & really tasty - especially liked the kenkey & the meat kebab starters! Friendly staff & customers too - I am looking forward to going back!
Starter, mains & a couple of shared Ghanaian beers came to about £15 a head - really good value.
