This is my local so have been a few times and always found the food a bit disappointing, but it has a new chef and new menu and the food is now a million times better! We had a cracking meal there on Saturday. The puds weren't really up to much, but the rest was very good indeed. I will be going a lot more often now!

Went last Thursday and had been looking forward to checking it out. My duck was great but my boyfriend's beef was over cookekd and really tough. He sent it back having asked for it to be cooked medium rare. This meant that I ate my meal alone and was finished by the time his came back. Mine was over cooked too but it was still enjoyable. In the meantime the veggies for the beef had just been kept warm on the hot plate so had all turned a bit chewy and the sauce was like dirty water - no taste to it. Really poor. I would not bother, especially for the price.

La Vie en Rose is great for lunch/dinner (make a reservation for the latter), though also a particularly good place for breakfast (altho they're only open past 10 a.m.) catering both the classical french items as well as big breakfasts for vegetarians as well as meat-eaters. Delicious food while the service leaves a bit of room for improvement (in the authentic French style)! Try out their croque monsieur (cheese & ham on layered toasts)...

Three of us had a rare filet steak at La Vie last Thursday (14 Dec). It was so tender you could have cut it with a spoon. Wonderful food. And a good claret, too. Total Bill £62 (+service). Probably the best value French restaurant in town. Joe.

My girlfriend and I really liked this resturant. The food was really tasty with good size portions and the service was fast and friendly. Close to the canal for a nice walk after your meal.

A friend and I went to eat at La Vie en Rose on a quiet Tuesday night a few weeks ago, and we were very disappointed.
The restaurant is very pretty on the outside; clearly a roomy, converted pub on a street corner. However the food we had was distinctly ordinary and lacked much in the way of flair or imagination. The snails were nice and garlicky, but the staff embarrassingly stingy with the bread (I think the best bit is mopping up the juices afterwards). The starter salad was a big mound of iceberg lettuce with the other ingredients scattered sparsely over the top.
The worst thing was the service. The waitress seemed surprised that we wanted a drink whilst we looked at the menus, and it didn't improve after that. At the end of our meal it took 20 minutes to attract anyone's attention for the bill and we had obviously finished all food and drinks on the table. During this time a staff member who could clearly see that we were getting more and more irritated was taking a meal break at a table a short distance away, and did nothing except shoot us the odd embarrassed smile.
We won't be going back.

I went for breakfast and found it over rated. The food wasn’t spectacular by any stretch of the imaginations and the value was poor. Service could have been much better on account of somewhat forgetful staff member who served us.
