Had a very disappointing experience at China City at the oriental city shopping centre Colindale. I find the staff to be rude and some what arrogent. I definatly shall not be eating there again! Plus I am chinese myself!! However have you ever eaten downstairs in the foodhall?? Theres a smashing little Dim Sum place in the corner who always serve great dimsum!

A renowned Dim Sum hotspot. This is where all the North London chinese come for Dim Sum on Sundays. Come early or be prepared to queue for one of the many tables in the vast eaterie.
This place is also very good for a la carte cantonese food. As ever, lobster noodles are a real treat.

Whenever we're feeling a bit glum, a lunchtime visit to the China City on Edgeware road cheers us up enormously. The surroundings are a bit tatty (the Oriental City was intended to be a Chinese/Japanese shopping centre like a mini-Brent Cross but has gone sadly downhill) but the restaurant itself is perfectly adequate).
The main endorsement of China City is the fact that 95% plus of the clientele are Chinese - and it's usually pretty full. Young people, old people, whole families, business groupings - it seems to be a focus for North London's Chinese community. And if they approve of the food, who am I to argue?
We can only speak to the Dim Sum, but it's excellent, enormously varied, tasty, freshly cooked and served promptly (though you never know what order it will arrive in). 6 dishes are enough for 2 - 7 if you're feeling really hungry. Too many individual dishes to comment on, but beware of the rice/meat combinations - the animal seems to have been attacked by a Texan with a chain saw - lots of bits of bone.
But overall, excellent, friendly and very reasonably priced. Last week we paid £28 (before tip) for 6 dishes, 2 Tsingtao beers and as much Chinese tea as we could drink - and they keep refreshing the pots.
So don't be put off by the rather dreary surroundings - go where the Chinese go!
(But I'd be interested to have feedback from those who have gone there for an evening meal)
