The Bavarian Beerhouse is supposed to be a 'German restaurant' that tries to imitate the feel of a Bavarian Beergarden. Unfortunately, it offers only a pathetic and not very warm atmosphere - a dark cellar with basic beergarden benches and tables. However, if it is crowded, for example for football matches like the European Championships, the atmosphere can be better. Overall, the food is alright, the portions are big and resemble more or less 'German' dishes. They offer German beer too, probably the best feature of the Bavarian Beerhouse. Value for money is ok, but if you consider the poor atmosphere, it is a little bit to expensive.

Disappointing. Went to this restaurant for an evening meal with a friend who is German. Both of us agreed on the following:

The atmosphere of the place was ok and if you wanted to drink loads of beer then I guess it would be fun however the food was ok ish. The desearts appeared to be frozen and certainly not "typical".

Be ready for it to be very loud as any noise reverberates from the low sealings.

Staff were friendly. Has a huge amount of room for improvement.

Have been there recently in June 08. Being German but not having lived there for about 10 years I expected some good quality food and beer and atmosphere reminding me of Germany. However I was highly disappointed, the place lacks atmosphere, the food quality was low and service was medium at best. Compared to similar German themed places I have seen in New York (e.g. Zum Schneider), the Bavarian Beerhouse has significant room for improvement.

Rent a large cellar, fill it with long benches, install a kitchen and bar, put up a banner across the wall and you are in business as a Bavarian beer house. Then get buxom waitresses, in Bavarian dress, to serve litres of excellent German Paulaner beer (£7.20 per litre) and shots of schnapps (at £3 each) to appreciative tables of rowdy young men, and you have a winning formula. In fact this formula is so good they have plans to open Beer Houses in Brighton and a second Beer House in London.

The Bavarian Beer House must have one of the most extensive German menus in London, rivalling that of the ‘Tiroler Hut’ in Bayswater. But the food is quirky. I had the Schweinbraten (roast pork £11.90), but the meat was tough. A colleague had the Wurstplatte (various sausages £11.50) which he thought was okay. My other colleague had the Jagerschnitzel (£10.50) which was a deep fried pork schnitzel dabbed with a thick mushroom sauce – but which should have been pan fried pork schnitzel served in a generous mushroom sauce. The Wienerschnitzel (£9.50) is pork and should be veal. The menu promises a lot, but even if you ignore my minor quibbles, doesn’t live up to expectations.

The Oompah band is greatly missed, as is the Gemutlichkeit (cosiness) which you experience in a German beer hall. Instead of tables full of people singing and swaying to the music of the Oompah band, we have rowdy chants of zigga zigga, hoy hoy hoy, which is not the same. But it is great drinking beer in 1 litre glasses, and the gasps of delight when the ‘schnappsmeter’ – a long wooden container which holds 16 shots of schnapps (£38) – passes by is palpable. The waitresses are very friendly and serve food and drink quickly, but they do have a tendency to push you to order more and more drinks.

So what is my conclusion? Not a great place to go for the food, which promises much but ultimately disappoints. It is definitely a good place to go for a drink, but in gangs of young men rather than two somes and four somes. Anyone who has been to Beer Halls in Germany will be disappointed on their visit to the Bavarian Beer House. So I think the Bavarian Beer House is rather a drinking den than Hofbrauhaus.

The Beerhouse as the name already indicates serves beer and is brilliant if you go in a large group and your aim is to get drunk. Our experience was as follows: After entering the premises and ordering some soft drinks to satisfy our thirst we were rather rudly reminded by the waitress that we were in a beerhouse and we should therefor order beer. To introduce our non english friends to some german food we ordered a variety of dishes in a hurry as the waitress got annoyed with us for taking so long. The food we got was so bad that it was rather embarrassing for us germans . We started with a german classic, the currywurst which turned out to be some weird hard sausage in a tomato onion sauce - no hint of curry, not sure if the cook actually ever had one before, the bratkartoffeln were deep fried like the fries. The haxe was ok but the sauerkraut tasted like the one you get in a tin (not fresh), the schnitzel was hard and burnt, the schweinebraten was not good but ok as were the kaasnocken. The Kaiserschmarrn was not fluffy and eggy and tasted as if it had been made days ago and just been heated up. The only thing that saved us was the vodka sherbet drinks to forget about the food we had. There will be no next time. I bet the Beerhouse won't mind as they seem to have enough clients.

Myself and my partner went there last night, prior to going to see a movie at the Barbican at it was just around the corner sort of.

I was expecting a warm and welcoming place - true to German hospitality, but this place is a dark and cold place, trying to make some atmosphere with a couple of candles on the table.

Upon arrival, the waitress was too busy blabbing to her friend to notice us standing there, eventually she noticed us, and we were seated. It then took her another 15 min to notice that we had not been served - we tried numerous times to get the attention of the staff but no luck - no apology for being kept waitng (if they had been busy - I could have understood this, but the place was half empty!!)

Service was then fairly quick, though maybe too quick as my partner had not finished he starter before the main arrived.

I had the fager snitzchel, which was not great, the meat was dry and tough, though the mushroom sauce on top was lovely!, my partner had the Vienna-style sausage, served with homemade potato salad and mustard, which was just that, and the meatloaf for mains, which looked okay, though a little on thin side.

We werent' there for the evening, so maybe as the night progressed and more beer was drunk, maybe it would have got better.

Will I be going back - nope!

I was really looking forward to my trip last night to the Bavarian Beerhouse. As a regular vistor to Germany, I always make an effort to vistit the local beerhalls and always find the hearty fayre on offer an ideal accompaniment to the excellent beers on tap.

Sadly, my expectations were not met. It wasn't packed, but given that it was a Tuesday night, it was a reasonable trade. The beer choice was quite good, but pretty unadventurous in its selection. Warsteiner was one of the beers though and as its a personal favourite I wasn't really grumbling. Service was prompt, polite amd efficient

The menu was as expected and I ordered bratwurst for starters and the schnitzel for mains. The sausage was fine and the accompanying potato salad was nice. The schnitzel though was appaling. Dry as a bone and flavourless, it felt like it was cooked straight from frozen. I asked the waitress if this is how it normally served to which she replied it was. It wasn't a patch on some of the wonderful home made efforts that I recently experienced in Bamberg a few weeks ago.

The desert was ok but no more. Black forest gateau was ok but the strudel was again disappointing and tasted more like a Sara Lee.

Given my love of things German, I should be a regular here. Unfortunately if last night was anything to go by, I won't.
