Tuesday, October 12, 2010 - It's intimate enough, even cosy in its soft blue chaired, purple carpeted way, but still feels a little dull and anonymous. That isn't stopping chef Robin Gill doing boldly sophisticated things with an elegant take on rustic European cooking. Take, for instance, a plump slice of sea bream fillet served with a leaf of greenest savoy cabbage and a smudge of butternut squash puree. This was the perfect seasonal dish: the wholesomeness of the nutty bulgur wheat and the splendid orange and sweetness of the butternut squash all seemed as nostalgically autumnal as kicking one's feet through a pile of crisp brown leaves.

My husband and I chose to dine here one evening after work, mainly because of its location and a rather tempting special offer. With the offer, it worked out as a good value meal and the food was really lovely. Each dish was presented with care and the flavours complimented each other beautifully. It is a beautiful space, as you'd expect, and we really enjoyed ourselves. Service was knowledgeable though a little slow at times. I would happily return.

This is by far the worst restaurant I have ever been to. Staff were neglectful, unhelpful and rude. The food was mediocre. The only saving grace was the beautiful setting! We had the set menu, which is where I think we went wrong, as the attitude of the staff made us feel like we were second-rate customers. The kitchen was unwilling to accommodate our dietary requirements and so I had to order a main course which I could not eat. Staff did not question the fact that my plate was taken away virtually untouched. Dessert was a creme brulee which was too cold and claggy, so was also left barely touched and this again was ignored by our waiter.

I usually love trying new restaurants but this is one I will not be going back to nor recommend!!

Everyone is either rude or useless or a combination of the two.

Seems to sum up London at the moment, wreck something extraordinary (the Royal Exchange) with something completely and preposterously useless (Sauterelle/ Grand Cafe). Avoid.
